Failing under KnitWell

Pros

Loyal customers and field team.

Cons

Chico’s has been pulling back on “culture” for the last 5 years- blaming Covid. They have stripped away employee incentives and recognition, all while increasing expectations. This year they decided to not give wage increases yet they added additional senior leadership positions at high salaries. This year they changed from allocating payroll to a selling cost model, taking stores down to 2:2 coverage and yet increased expectations for ship from store, increased product levels in most stores and increased expectations on customer outreach. If you walk in a Chico’s store, the team is drained, exhausted and burnt out. They aren’t able to keep up with the demands from senior leadership. If you are considering joining this organization, I would recommend visiting a local store and asking the team what their thoughts are on the company- most will not be favorable. They also changed all store managers to salary this year because they do not want to pay OT when it might be required to work 40+ hours to keep your store open to operating hours with the cuts in payroll. The amount of layoffs at home office over the last year have been staggering. The KWG came in with their team and replaced tenured associates who have been around for 15+ years.

Pros

Fun at times with conversations amongst employees

Cons

The pettiness The bad mouthing of current employees or past employees, if the manager was talking about them I am sure she was talking about me Manager gave out her phone number to all employees to contact by text or calls, when I had to text her , her reply back was condescending and not to pleasant. I got an apology the next day. She knew she was wrong She got a bad review because she did not present herself in a positve way when helping a customer, she talked about the previous management I had an upcoming date that I needed off and she knew but she scheduled me for that day anyway I was told there was a review about me apologizing to much? That was a lie, I looked at all the reviews none about me but she had a negative one about her I only apologized to my customers if we did not have a product or we did not fit their expectations Yes I did apologize to some employees, I was in training and learning. Im sure it was the fellow coworkers that complained I do have problems with my right foot and at the moment my nice pair of nikes was providing more comfort to my feet, and was told I needed a drs note? But another employee who his younger was wearing very dirty tennis shoes, not a good look if they a noticably dirty Not good training, barely had any

Pros

I truly enjoyed helping people, whether a customer or an employee. I liked the fast-paced environment, leading a team, being responsible for the daily operations of a retail store.

Cons

You will run all day for very little money. The general manager and the district manager made it a toxic environment, although I hear it is under new management.

Pros

Fun role, remote work, flexible schedules, great team, excellent manager (she’s the only reason for any stars at all).

Cons

Knitwell took over and dismantled the team of 100. Offered no other options within the company for some highly talented individuals with many years of experience in retail (some were previous Chico’s, WHBM and Soma store managers). One phone call, and we were all done. Not that I’d work in the store setting, because every manager in my territory was very unhappy with being overtasked that I think it caused them significant health issues.

Pros

Great team at La Cantera! Love working for Chico's. My managers are friendly, professional, respectful to one another, and always willing to help new sales associates get comfortable on the sales floor.

Cons

None! Just keep doing what you're doing.

Lack of Diversity

Pros

Overall, perks like half-day Fridays in the summer, dog-friendly office with a dog park, and a week off during the holidays support work-life balance, but they don’t make up for the larger issues with pay, growth, and stability.

Cons

Pay is low, and raises are very minimal (typically under 1–2%). Promotions are extremely rare, and career growth opportunities are limited. Managers do not care if you want a promotion. The company lacks diversity in hiring, with most teams made up of white employees. Frequent restructures and layoffs create instability, even as new positions are added instead of retaining existing talent.
