Pros

Made some great friends, really enjoyed the social side of work. Lovely office with great views of the MCG. Social club was good fun. I liked the stand up desks. Some key managers where fantastic and lead by example, felt like I could go to them and they would help. Other managers were not approachable and didn't check in on their teams.

Cons

Really high turnover, people weren't performance managed - they were just told to do more. When you are doing well you can get away with anything, when you aren't performing you are made to feel very anxious. Lots of closed door meetings which caused anxiety in staff and rumours to start. A lot of average or under performers which bring down the overall standards of work to drop. Senior management had clear favourites and would spend long afternoons out drinking with them.

Pros

Hybrid work arrangement, good onboarding and intro to the company, accommodating and friendly people from HR to the Senior Management, supportive teammates and Team Leader

Cons

Salary is average but good benefits especially Medicard which I got to use even if I’m new. Not able to enjoy some of the holidays because we need to follow the other countries holidays.

Pros

Good company events, many fun people around, great team work if you're under the right team and right manager

Cons

the corporate culture is like a cult, KPI heavily focused, they dont care how much effort you spent they only care about result, some managers were promoted simply based on how much they have billed when they were senior cons...can have very bad management styles.

Pros

Location - great views of the river.

Cons

I witness bullying from senior management, toxic behaviours were allowed and lauded. They pick and choose when to give you your bonus - it's discretionary on whether your manager likes you or not. The decision is completely up to them whether they give it to you, and if you're not performing one month - they'll make sure they try and give you every excuse not to pay it to you even though you performed the month before. Upper management gloat about how much money they have, to recruitment consultants on $70k a year. Absolutely toxic and out of touch.

Thank you for leaving a review. I’m obviously disappointed to read your comments. Our team-based profit share bonus model, which is unique in the industry, ensures that we deliver the best service to our clients and candidates, and allows us to reward our people for their whole contribution to the team. And we do not tolerate toxic or bullying behaviour.. Pros

A good working environment and fun side activities Diversity where there are both local and expats Not too much politics and drama Sales-driven so good for people who are agressive on achieving KPIs

Cons

First, managers are not well-trained to be good leaders. Most of them are good individual performers and then promoted to become managers while they are not qualified yet for a leadership role. It's only ok to lead juniors, not to lead senior members. Still, there are a few managers who are very good so it depends on which team that you are interviewing. Second, the current Associate Director recieved most of bad feedback from members who used to be and still under her. Her agressiveness may help her in individual sales role, but not empowering team members to take her as a role model. Her leadership is micromanagement, not sharp enough to quickly catch up with a new industry (she takes over 3 teams in her role) and communication shows somewhat hierarchy, really round and round and not to the point (but when it's to the point, it turns out a wrong point!) Third, even the current Country Manager is not ready for a strategic executive role. He's excellent at commercial skills to be a trainer thanks to his long-term recruitment expertise. However, when it comes to leadership, he lacks of overall people skills of a top leader such as strategic, listening, inspiring, convincing and a role model. Therefore, a lot of senior experienced people left the company due to the weak management team. Lastly, bonus scheme is very unclear. It depends on the managers who will calculate and explain but some managers lack of transparency and reasonable explainations.

Pros

It’s a great place to build a strong foundation in the company. If you’re on the right team, you’ll learn a lot. Strong performance is rewarded, and consistent success in hitting KPIs and achieving high billing is highly praised. The company also offers fun events and activities that provide a refreshing break from work from time to time.

Cons

Your career at RW will heavily depend on who manages you. Many senior management members are either not involved in billing or contribute very little to recruitment activities. Instead, their primary focus is on constantly monitoring consultants' KPIs and activities. Some take micromanagement to an extreme—gaslighting consultants and making them feel incompetent when they fail to meet billing targets or KPIs. Sexual and power harassment are tolerated as long as individuals excel at office politics. Over the past 5 years, I have seen more than 20 consultants leave under particular senior manager while constant replacements are made, The root cause remains unaddressed. There is no clear incentive bonus structure. At times, your manager may take advantage of this, giving you a significantly lower bonus while keeping some portion for themselves.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I'm pleased to hear that you appreciated the training and hands-on recruitment experience at Robert Walters. However, I'm sorry to learn about your concerns regarding KPIs and perceived micromanagement. KPIs are an essential tool for us, providing clarity and direction for our team members. They ensure that everyone is aligned with their teams’ goals and can identify areas for their own professional development. Importantly, there is a strong correlation between meeting KPIs and achieving successful outcomes, which helps us maintain our high standards and deliver strong results. Our aim with KPIs is to empower individuals by giving them clear benchmarks to strive for, along with the support and training needed to achieve them, rather than promoting micromanagement. To further support our employees, we regularly conduct employee engagement surveys to gather feedback and implement improvements where needed. We focus on equipping our managers with the skills necessary to help their teams thrive and maintain a zero-tolerance policy for office politics or harassment. We have clear reporting channels and processes in place for any harassment claims, ensuring that concerns are addressed promptly and effectively. Our commitment is to maintain a supportive and respectful work environment. Regarding your concerns about bonuses, I want to clarify that our bonus distribution process involves several checks and multiple layers of approval, including my oversight, to ensure fairness and transparency, and it's not possible for managers to retain any portion for themselves unfairly. I would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your experiences. Please feel free to email me at Rachna.Ratra@robertwalters.com.jp so we can arrange a confidential conversation.

Flexibility, renumeration, opportunity, team spirit,

Cons

Tends to be a focus on the senior management team rather than those at the coal face.
