Toxic Work Environment at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong Purchasing Department
23 Feb 2023 - Purchasing Assistant in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon CityRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Despite the initial challenges, my colleagues at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong Purchasing Department were always willing to teach and help me no matter how busy they were. The level of support and guidance I received from my colleagues was invaluable in helping me get up to speed with the job. Additionally, the strong organizational culture at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong instilled a sense of pride in me that motivated me to work harder. On top of that, as an admin staff, I also enjoyed the perk of receiving free laundry credits, which allowed me to conveniently keep my work clothes clean and presentable while also saving me money on laundry expenses. However, there were some challenges and areas for improvement that I encountered during my time there.
Cons
Working at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong Purchasing Department had its challenges. Despite the luxurious brand name promising a certain level of professionalism, the reality fell short. One major issue was the abusive behaviour of a supervisor who constantly yelled, swore, name-called, and used offensive and vulgar language, creating a toxic environment where employees were constantly on edge and unable to work comfortably. In addition to this, the work-life balance was poor, with staff members expected to work unpaid overtime every day. The office itself was unattractive, and the lack of company WiFi reception in the purchasing office added an unnecessary burden of having to use personal mobile data for Microsoft Teams meetings. The department's unprofessionalism extended to the storage of old files and documents in dry food storage, which was concerning for a luxury hotel brand. It was also disappointing to be tasked with picking up laundry for superiors, which was not mentioned in the job responsibilities and added an extra burden to daily tasks.
