Poor pay, no progression - best to avoid

Pros

Good coworkers (shame about senior management) OK flexibility (although decreasing, with a deeply disliked announcement that got the reactions removed from future townhalls, because senior management don't want to deal with entirely obvious reactions to their announcements)

Cons

Non-existent career progression - impossible to advance, even into positions that are what you're already doing (each job title has two bands - you can try and wrangle a progression into the top band. If you got told you're in the top band? Tough, that's all the progression you can get, even if the next role up is what you're already doing - you can be doing that for years without getting any acknowledgement or pay increase). The only thing you get for long service is 1 or 2 extra days off, not even a gift voucher! The job family structure assumes a pyramid, with lots of lower-ranked workers and a few higher-ranked ones - when the company has mostly mid-rank and above workers, it's not fit for purpose and doesn't work with the skill-mix the company has. Bad pay, even worse pay increases (sub-inflation for several years, despite taking on multiple new responsibilities), and no relationship between pay and position (the breadth of experience - from a few years to multiple decades - under the same title makes it obvious that "salary" and "position" are entirely unlinked, and an announced pay review has never been finished/released). Multiple companies awkwardly glued together - you might have to work with multiple, completely unrelated, products, repos, tech-stacks etc., and switch between them several times a day, having to remember all the wriggly differences between them every time. Will you get paid more for this? Of course not, even though it's multiple different roles in one.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience hasn’t met expectations, particularly around pay and career progression—these are areas we know matter deeply to our colleagues. On your point about recent announcements, we want to clarify that the discussion referenced was about evolving our hybrid working approach. This includes encouraging office-based colleagues to spend a minimum of two days per week in the office, supporting quarterly face-to-face time between colleagues and managers, and creating opportunities for remote colleagues to connect in person on a quarterly basis. Our intent is to balance flexibility with connection, collaboration, and wellbeing. Regarding town halls, we have a duty of care to all colleagues who present and participate. Following feedback that a very small number of individuals were generating a high volume of reactions, our CEO acknowledged this and we made the decision to pause and review how reactions are used. The aim is to find a better way to maintain open feedback while ensuring a respectful and supportive environment for everyone. We also hear your concerns around career progression and how our current structures are working in practice. This is an area we are actively reviewing, and we recognise there is more to do. If you’re open to it, I would genuinely welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly—your perspective could help shape improvements and new ideas. We remain committed to building a fair, transparent and inclusive environment where colleagues can grow and feel valued. Thank you again for sharing your views. Tanya - CHRO

Pros

I have just reached my one year anniversary at System C and it’s is one of the most rewarding places I have worked. From my first day, I felt welcomed into an organisation that is inclusive, professional, and kind, with a strong values based culture that genuinely shows up in how people work together. In my role I have been trusted with meaningful responsibility and given the space to shape work that aligns with both organisational priorities and positive social impact. There is a real sense that purpose matters here, not just delivery, and that people are encouraged to think thoughtfully, collaborate openly, and do the right thing. The management team are supportive, approachable, and engaged. I’ve always felt listened to and encouraged, whether that’s around ideas, challenges, or professional development. Teamwork is a real strength, colleagues are caring, willing to help, and invested in shared success rather than siloed working. System C is a diverse and inclusive organisation where people are respected for who they are and what they bring. It’s clear that the company cares not only about outcomes, but about its people and the wider impact of its work. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to contribute to my first year and genuinely enjoy being part of the team. Pros: • Inclusive and diverse culture • Supportive and caring management • Strong teamwork and collaboration

Cons

The are no cons so far.

Pros

All of my colleagues are lovely, always trying their best and want to help as much as they can. There is flexibility in working arrangements and remote working is available to most.

Cons

The workload is incredibly high, everyone is stressed and burnout is common. Below average pay. Management use bullying tactics. Progression is non existent. The promised career framework is shaping up to be a tick box exercise, as you can't progress as there are no jobs to progress to. Constant change and usually for the worse. Micromanagement, sexism, mixed messages and unrealistic targets are becoming the norm. Flexible working not offered to new starters. Painful meetings where everyone feels ignored are routine.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. While all comments are important to us, I am particularly concerned to learn that you have experienced sexism. This behaviour is entirely unacceptable and does not reflect our values or the culture we strive to uphold at System C. I would encourage you to contact me or Tanya, our Chief HR Officer, at your earliest convenience so that we can understand the situation and take appropriate action. Nick

Pros

Wellbeing support has been introduced and was readily offered when I was under severe pressure on recent deployments. Still some potential for home working perhaps. Did receive overtime pay for weekend working on GoLives and out of hours upgrades, although not sure that is the policy for new starters.

Cons

Salary does not reflect the responsibility and pressures of a customer facing workstream lead role on large multi million pound projects. I spent a very large proportion of my working life at System C, and am no doubt easy to identify, but I owe it to future staff to give my honest opinion and some kind of provable baseline on my old personal working conditions, although for others their conditions obviously may differ. I hope transparency is always welcome at System C. System C was a good employer prior to COVID, under the original founders, the McKesson Corporation and the Symphony Technology Group. Since then however a new private equity owner (CVC Capital Partners) has taken over and things have changed drastically and the atmosphere has become very cold. My average annual salary "rise" for last 5 years under the current ownership was under £1500 (2.76% per year), pre tax. Average bonus when paid (which was not every year) was under £1200 per year, pre tax. Extensive job cuts after acquisition of numerous smaller companies have made it very slow and difficult to do a deployment type job, as much knowledge and experience has been lost and overburdened staff have retreated from engagement with their colleagues. There is a current heavy emphasis on reaching billable hours targets. Resulting heavy focus on time recording damages interest in just doing your job. My old role was home based, although pre COVID I was working 2 to 3 days a week on hospital sites and in some cases staying in hotels away from home. Post COVID this switched to full time home working, as the NHS did not want people on site. Just before I left however, there was a switch in focus to pulling people back into offices, under the guise of "collaboration". A desk and parking space is bookable via a company app. Max employer pension contributions (Defined Contribution pension) for employees at my level was 8%, matched to employee contributions. Only 28 days holiday a year (including one for your birth month) after a very length service. Poor understanding by senior and middle management on what customer facing deployment staff do on a daily basis, causing friction and questioning/rejection of timesheets Often faced hostile senior level customer staff with minimal support. Helped successfully deploy over a dozen large EPR projects, however the last project took twice as long and the week after the successful GoLive, we had a Town Hall meeting. The senior leadership team offered absolutely no thanks to the deployment team for their hard work over those years. The only person who did was a HR person in the last few seconds of the call. When I left to retire, I received many very kind messages from deployment colleagues and customers, who personally contacted me and thanked me for all my help over the years. I received a cold standard letter from HR thanking me for my efforts but making no mention of my retirement, although the junior HR person who conducted my exit interview was very kind and thanked me on behalf of the company. Senior management said nothing on my retirement. Not one sent an email. Says is all really. It may work for you and it did for me for a while, but if (like myself), you are a quiet, capable, slightly unambitious person who just wants to do their job, then the current culture will be very difficult for you. I genuinely felt I was taken for granted and was being exploited by the time I decided to leave. Caveat emptor.

Great people, slightly creaky systems

Pros

Overall the people are great – friendly and supportive. Management are approachable, which makes it easy to raise stuff when needed. There’s been a good bit of investment in new internal systems recently, which shows they’re trying to move things forward. The company’s been through a fair few changes – not everyone loves that, but it’s heading in the right direction.

Cons

Some processes are still a bit slow and could do with a rethink. Communication between departments could definitely be better – sometimes feels like we’re all working in silos. Career progression isn’t always clear, and it can be hard to know what the next step looks like.

It’s always good to hear “great people” called out – it’s a big part of what makes System C a great place to work, and it’s I hear regularly from colleagues. Change can be difficult for colleagues, so it’s reassuring that you can see the direction we’re heading in. On processes, if you joined the recent town hall you’ll have heard about our Quality Management System and the work underway to consolidate and standardise, so we can improve where it’s needed. Alongside this, our HR team is developing a careers framework to give more clarity on roles and progression. There’s more to come on this soon. Nick
