Abysmal Start for New Role-Avoid

Pros

You're surrounded by very intelligent people who know their stuff. They value amition and intelligence. They feed you a lot, which is nice.

Cons

Came into a new role and was expected to jump into work with little to no training and build expertise on things even my seniors did not know. Other employees were rude, dismissive and outright nasty to questions. Did not get to work with anyone closely and with long time staffers staying in their lane no one reached out to give direction for a new role. Expectations for my role were unclear and never communicated outright. I did ask what a typical 9-5 would look like during the interview process and never got a straight answer, which was a mistake on my part, but the onus is on the employer to give new hires direction and ensure they are fulfilling a role. A lot of training was "judgement calls'' but when new hires start they will not know the judgements they should be looking out for. Avoid!

Pros

Good company culture, friendly people. However could offer more competitive salary.

Cons

Don’t get in back office roles if you want to move up in the company thinking it is an entry door. It’s a trap, you will get stuck. + management is awful there. The best entry level section would be client relations, it’s a great way to learn about the company, get into mutual funds and management is way much better there. You will get more chance to level up.

Pros

stable career for new graduates who aren't driven for particular career goals

Cons

1. There are many repetitive and manual tasks without learning, coaching and development opportunities for career growth 2. This organization is ultimately owned by a rich Canadian family who have deep connections with at least three former Canadian PMs and other European political leaders. Their businesses are operated with senior leaders who have a clear understanding their career is rewarded based on loyalty (seniority, status quo) instead of contributions. 3. Many professionals recruited from CPPIB, BMO, Fidelity and Manulife have shift their priorities to focus on their personal life instead of pursuing excellence. 4. Similar to other financial institutions, nepotism exists in many hiring practices at IGM Financial which has a toxic positivity to ignore negative feedbacks and dictate how people feel.
