Pros

Peers within the consultant pool and immediate project managers are pleasant, intelligent, and professional. Breadth of project topics has actually increased a lot in last 6 months for select practices, improving upon a frequent previous criticism that the work was repetitive.

Cons

Interactions with firm management are rare but always frustrating Increasingly limited benefits Lack of proper DEI initiatives Senior management lacks people management and communication ability Lack of resources needed to complete projects (subscriptions, tools, hardware) Reports of professional misconduct and harassment have been under-investigated

Pros

The consultant pool at Kaiser is made up of kind and helpful employees. If you are interested in market research with smaller amounts of strategy work sprinkled in, you might be happy at Kaiser. Kaiser does work with top-tier clients because the company is able to sell projects at a much lower cost than competitor firms. WLB is better than at other big consulting firms, especially with little to no travel (think avg. ~50-60hrs depending on the project), but it is still consulting, so work can be unpredictable.

Cons

The leadership team at Kaiser is so focused on profit (with practices operating nearly independently of each other and practically competing on their profit margins) that employee development is minimal. Leadership does not invest in tools for the work to be successful; at the lower consultant levels, lots of time is spent searching for people on LinkedIn and either using limited InMail messages or connecting with strangers to request that they participate in an research interview. This is repetitive and the kind of outbound work that SDRs at other companies have had automated for years. Consultants are seen as replaceable and not respected by the leadership team. Kaiser laid off a number of consultants earlier in the year and then realized they needed them back, but are still not valued. When consultants bring up things that could be improved at the company, their suggestions are not taken into account nor really even considered. Kaiser touts one employee's success at going from associate consultant to partner as proof of a path upward at the firm, but this has only happened once in the history of the company. The leadership team is out of touch, hands-off, and highly focused on getting the company back in the office, despite many of them living out of state and traveling to DC less than once a month. Pay is noticeably lower than market rate and consulting perks (transportation, meal reimbursement, etc.) are lower than at other firms. If Kaiser wants to compete with MBB firms then they need to pay people equivalent salaries. When you have folks a few years out of college managing projects, pay them as you would an engagement manager at a competitor firm. Kaiser is quite literally taking advantage of employees' willingness to work above their pay grade, and this tanks company culture and employees' interest in staying for more than a couple of years.

Pros

Working at Kaiser Associates/Kx Advisors out of college is one of the most jam-packed, productive, and immersive experiences you can possibly get at such a young age. The very early development opportunities are unseen at peer firms, and Associate Consultants can even get to present portions of deliverables to clients in their first couple months. Few firms provide their junior level staff with such significant early opportunities and that speaks volumes to Kaiser/Kx's trust in their people. On that note, junior staff get opportunities to manage significant and complex workloads, but with patient guidance and mentorship from mid and senior level staff. Whether it's managing primary research, conducting surveys, building models, or preparing deliverables, Associate Consultants get ample opportunities to learn the ropes and develop skills in project management and execution. Junior staff can experience both a great diversity of work and projects and also a small firm culture. Generalist junior staff at Kaiser have access to all practices, each of which are doing very interesting, relevant, and even global work with blue chip clients. Short projects (~3-8 weeks) allow generalist junior staff to experience many different projects within just a few months. While commonly stated everywhere, one can't go without praising the sheer caliber of people who work at Kaiser / Kx. Remarkable intelligence aside, Kaiser and Kx employees are most notably kind, collaborative, and downright interesting people. It's a wonderful group to work with, even with a virtual work environment.

Cons

While not nessecarily unique to Kaiser, some challenges remain with work-life balance especially in a virtual environment. Hours can potentially drag on and some weeks can be especially long, especially on more involved or challenging projects. Mid and senior leadership do make efforts to control overwork and promote WLB, but it still remains a challenge. Some processes can also use improvements, such as the primary sourcing process which can be tedious at times based on the tools and methodologies available. Moreover, there can sometimes be a lack of individuals at the firm who are familiar with certain tools like survey software, which can create issues for junior staff learning new tools for the first time.

Pros

After finishing the Summer Associate program, I undoubtedly knew that I wanted to return to Kaiser as a Consultant even upon leaving for a real estate investment firm; Kaiser is a special place in that it is a boutique-sized company that values the happiness and ultimate success of its people and the excellence and precision reflected in the work provided to clients. Moreover, I have been nothing but supported by my teammates during my transition back into the consulting space. Kaiser is a wonderful place not only to launch a career in consulting, but also to polish oneself into a stellar business professional. Engagements: Innovative, stimulating research projects that enable professionals to develop, refine, and perfect skills in primary + secondary research, client deliverable generation, and presentations Office culture: The people at Kaiser are what make this company so special. In addition to being intelligent and classy, they are genuinely kind; Coworkers enjoy each other's company inside and outside of the office, caring about getting to know one another separate from project-work.

Cons

Slightly long hours, but that is to be expected in this industry!

Pros

Great people Real emphasis on growth mindset Clients are top-tier - you work with household names and because it's a boutique, you get hands on experience owning the project earlier than at KPMG or Accenture

Cons

Expect to be burnt out once you start to manage projects Work can get a bit repetitive and not too quantitative High churn rate for a reason Firm seems to have had issues in 2023 with layoffs

Pros

Interesting projects, some nice people

Cons

Revolving door of managers. Very limited focus on people development and growth; they expect everyone to churn rather than stay, which ends up being a self fulfilling prophecy.

Very Mixed Feelings, Significant Leadership Vacuum

Pros

For people early in their career it can be a great place to gain exposure and responsibility quickly. The early career talent are smart and fun people. If your longer-term goal is to do corporate strategy internally at a company, Kaiser is worth considering as you learn about the models and inputs that inform corporate strategy. Just know that Kaiser is not a strategy consulting firm. Perhaps the best way to describe it is a research firm that informs corporate strategy. Projects are typically 4 to 6 weeks in length and very research heavy. Some interesting and prestigious clients and a good opportunity for early career talent to gain exposure to multiple industries.

Cons

There is very little training and it's a learn by doing/trial by fire environment Partners are focused exclusively on revenue and margins. They care little for employees or their development (and don't let them fool you otherwise!) There is really no corporate culture to speak of other than making money. If you are a senior hire, realize that the last time a partner was promoted internally was nearly a decade ago and there is no clear path to partner nor a clear intent to promote new partners. 2 of the 3 partners who were with the firm for 30 years recently retired and despite talk for years not a single senior manager was identified for or groomed to become partner. Most of the middle management and all of the partners "grew up" at Kaiser from early in their careers. This creates a highly insular environment and perpetuates the leadership vacuum, particularly as there are no leadership models with one bright exception. A consequence is that external senior hires typically flame out very quickly and / or are very frustrated. Kaiser is in effect an umbrella organization that houses several individual industry practices that operate largely independently of each other. There is minimal collaboration across practices.
