Pros

- Good opportunity to get exposure to various business consulting skills: primary and secondary research, competitive landscape study, market modeling, consumer insights study and executive presentations - Client base is decent (few Fortune 100 companies) and is not diverse - Some projects are strategy focused, while majority are pure market research

Cons

- Super long hours (60+ per week) primarily because the projects are mismanaged, understaffed and undersold. I have worked in highly complex strategy consulting projects for other organizations and never had to work more than 40-45 hours per week because the managers knew exactly what was to be delivered and the VPs knew what they sold to the client - Leadership lacks experience in their industry practices (apart from consumer and industrial goods). Often times, project teams have to continuously revise and modify their research processes and deliverables because of improper planning and lack of leadership knowledge. It's important for project leaders to have insights on high-level market size numbers, distribution channels, clients' product capabilities (to name a few). When you are working on undersold and understaffed projects, strong leadership guidance is the key to efficient project execution

Pros

Client interaction at very early stages in your career, great colleagues, first name basis with firm leadership, no "glass ceiling" opportunity to rise as far as your skills and drive will take you, ability to work autonomously and design project approaches

Cons

Potential for long hours, remote leadership, your ability to align to a practice area of your interest can depend on external factors, partnership structure does not encourage collaboration between practices

Pros

Can't speak more highly to the experiences Kaiser gives its consultants. The firm's small size and flat org structure provides them as much responsibility as they're willing to take on, as well as project and people management experience at a very early tenure. Consultants who put in the effort will become top-tier strategic/analytical thinkers, researchers, writers, presenters, collaborators, and experts in managing their time - all of which are skill sets valuable to any business role from Corporate Strategy to Start-up Founder. Additionally, the firm offers the opportunity to work across a variety of industries (e.g., Healthcare, Payments, Consumer goods, Industrials, Tech, Private Equity) and business challenges (e.g., product road map development, channel strategy, go-to-market strategy) with projects averaging 4-8 weeks, facilitating consultants in their soul-searching journey to figure out where they want to take their career. Furthermore, the culture is fantastic (super sharp people that are fun to be around), employees are fairly promoted based on their performance/efforts with little politics getting in the way, and there is little travel involved, allowing for much more flexible hours relative to other consultancies.

Cons

Not all projects are super stimulating/interesting so every once and a while you'll have projects that seem a bit dull or repetitive, but these are becoming less and less common. On the flip side, some projects are very interesting and challenging from a strategic perspective but those often come with long hours and high-stakes situations that can be stressful. That said, these are all cons you find in all consulting.

Pros

After finishing the Summer Associate program, I undoubtedly knew that I wanted to return to Kaiser as a Consultant even upon leaving for a real estate investment firm; Kaiser is a special place in that it is a boutique-sized company that values the happiness and ultimate success of its people and the excellence and precision reflected in the work provided to clients. Moreover, I have been nothing but supported by my teammates during my transition back into the consulting space. Kaiser is a wonderful place not only to launch a career in consulting, but also to polish oneself into a stellar business professional. Engagements: Innovative, stimulating research projects that enable professionals to develop, refine, and perfect skills in primary + secondary research, client deliverable generation, and presentations Office culture: The people at Kaiser are what make this company so special. In addition to being intelligent and classy, they are genuinely kind; Coworkers enjoy each other's company inside and outside of the office, caring about getting to know one another separate from project-work.

Cons

Slightly long hours, but that is to be expected in this industry!

Pros

Anyone who works at Kaiser will tell you the people are its greatest asset – and it’s very true. Kaiser attracts an incredible group of young professionals who are friendly, enjoy spending time together, and forge deep and lasting professional and personal connections. Because of the firm’s size, employees have a lot of interaction with senior members of the firm early in their careers, and these leaders are excellent mentors for young professional who put in the effort to develop relationships. Also due to the firm’s size, employees are given opportunities and responsibilities far beyond that which they would receive at an equivalent experience level at another firm. For those excited by the possibility of learning quickly and taking on a great deal of responsibility, Kaiser is an incredible place to launch a career. Kaiser also attracts an impressive list of clients, especially for a firm of its size. Projects are frequently for clients at the top of their industries who turn to Kaiser for help addressing some really interesting problems.

Cons

Like any consulting firm, Kaiser frequently demands long hours. While the hours are better than at a firm where Mon. to Thurs. travel is the norm, this is certainly not a 9-5 job. The compensation used to below market level, but recent changes to the compensation structure have been a big improvement.

Pros

They pay is fair and overall compensation in good. But thats about the only positive thing about this firm.

Cons

First of all, this is not the elite boutique that it wants to pretend it is. Its client base is mainly smaller organisations or at best, mid-market firms that cannot afford the consulting fees for the larger, more established strategy firms such as MBB/Deloitte/Accenture Strategy, etc. Although most people are "good/nice", there is an air of pretentiousness around this place, with long-term employees comparing themselves to MBB guys. And while the firms recruits (or tries to recruit) heavily from Oxbridge, the quality of graduates is dire. In the past we have often manage to get the ones who didn't make it to other consulting firms or even the Big 4. And most of them, after being at Kaiser for a year or two try to exit onto a larger Strategy house or a Big 4, but the reputation (or lack thereof) of Kaiser means no one is willing to touch them with a barge-pole. Also, working hours are ridiculously long, even compared to other Strategy consulting firms. All in all, if you want to be paid alright (not the highest, but fair) and think you can make a career out of this organisation and make it to Partner one day, then sure go ahead. But don't think of quitting or get yourself fired because no one in industry wants you because of your unheard-of consulting boutique and no larger Strategy house wants you due to your substandard client experience.

Pros

Kaiser breaks the mold of traditional consulting companies by providing top tier exposure to clients without the grind of Mon through Friday travel. I can't say enough how much I appreciate not being on the road full time ... one can actually have a social life with friends and family in their home city! I also feel Kaiser is an unbelievable place to grow your career and develop skills that separate oneself from ones peers at other jobs or in business school. When I attended business school (which Kaiser fully sponsored ... another perk!), I felt I was a step ahead of peers because I had supported Kaiser projects that had involved many of the issues included in the text. At Kaiser you truly do receive an "informal" business degree, which can give you a solid leg up in the next phase of your career. I also joined Kaiser because of the early exposure one receives to managing others, and because of the friendly and upbeat culture. I truly believe that the people at a firm contribute more to overall happiness at the job than the job itself; and at other consulting companies I interviewed with, I just didn't feel the same openness and positive attitude that I felt at Kaiser. I realize this could just be a personal perception, so feel free to take it for what you will. We have had some turnover recently at the senior level and manager level, but it seems to me like this will actually make us stronger, not weaker. Our firm is getting more streamlined in its management, which should allow us to be more responsive to issues at hand. And lastly, Kaiser restructured its comp earlier this year to be more competitive with the bigger firms. So while it used to be you had to accept slightly lower pay for all the softer-side benefits that Kaiser confers (e.g. limited travel, somewhat shorter work week, DC location), now you get paid similar to other firms, which is a big plus. Note though that we tend to promote quicker than other firms (a big plus), and because of this, Kaiser's titles (e.g. Manager) may not align in tenure with the titles at other firms, and thus comp may differ on a title vs. title basis. E.g. we hire MBAs at Principal level, whereas McK hires at Associate level. Comp is pretty similar between the two, but obviously the titles are different.

Cons

Like any top strategy consulting firm, the hours can at times be a lot. But on average, hours at Kaiser are definitely lower than other top-tier firms like McK, LEK, Bain, etc. Generally the folks who come from other consulting companies prefer and appreciate our work/life balance; whereas the folks who come from places that work 9-5 complain about the extended hours and feel they are unfair.
