Pros

They had some great perks and you get a chance to solve problems on a very large scale. I got some exposure to exciting open source projects.

Cons

Very disorganized and very low morale. There were huge layoffs while I was there, and one of the founders left. It was a rough time for Yahoo! Also, although they embrace open source, a lot of tools that are critical were forks of open source things that were poorly maintained or quickly abandoned. Some of the more mature forks developed into basically proprietary tools, with little, or poor documentation. There was a lot of out for number 1 and teamwork was lacking. Many teams did basically the same thing and didn't even know their counterpart teams existed (including mine).

Pros

Relatively easy to get things done for a company with such a long history. Certainly not "start up" like, but processes like resource allocation have less overhead than working at a company like Google. Pay was pretty good for the midwest. I hear they are currently pretty open to remote work. It's also not the hardest place to work.

Cons

Opportunities are limited in software engineering. Since Apollo took over, SE was viewed mostly under the lens of "what is the least we can invest here to get the job done". There used to be a really good office in Champaign with lots of very talented software engineers put together. That's gone now.
