total lack of respect

Pros

Challenging work and rewarding to see a customer do well with what we help them with. Mentoring was good but problematic since we lack significant reward mechanisms.

Cons

Sales and the leadership of this company knowingly and willfully put the execution team in to repeated no win scenarios. I had the opportunity to interface with much of our senior leadership and it became apparent they have no respect for the managers, site teams, and engineers. They do not defend us against unreasonable customers or their expectations. They take the easy way out for themselves but leave it to us to figure out how to make their unreasonable promises to the customers happen. All while giving no support and pitting teams against each other. Rewarding my mangers was difficult. Buying meals for a project well done requires prior executive approvals (which they do give) which makes surprise rewards being potentially on your dime. Raises were also very lackluster and homogenized. Good performers and bad performers were treated nearly identical. Many of my reports realized this and simply moved on.

no support and over confident

Pros

Fair amount of vacation time No shortage of work Good job security Small management

Cons

Project schedules have become utterly unworkable with the available resources. Every group is overtaxed and leadership keeps on taking more work. Our president is arrogant and pretends to know more than he really does. He constantly is telling how other people should do their job but when you ask for help all you get is a lecture on how bad you are doing. Software is a bunch of primadonnas. They think the world revolves around them but they constantly delay the projects for no good reason. They can't seem to get along with any group. They see themselves are totally indispensable to the company but really clueless as to what we do as a company. Site management can't find things to save their lives. It's easier to have us order more vs getting off the chair and look. One could not find some part and at the end of the project we found those in the parts he was using for a footrest in the trailer since the start of the project. No repercussions for people not doing their job but I get reprimanded for budget overages. Our manufacturing facility can't make or ship anything on time. That would be fine but our president seems to think that's our job to solve. Ask for help and I'm told to make it work with what we have. Raises are a constant joke of how much you are appreciated.

Pros

Good work culture. Supportive senior team members. Would love if the job description and actual job responsibilities matched better.

Cons

Salary is not competitive. Leadership is a bit mismanaged and cross-functional teams have very less communication

Pros

The other engineers feel like comrades for all the fights you will go through with them against toxic management and punishing schedules.

Cons

This place is a sweat shop for engineers. The salaries are incredibly below average for our industry right now. Asking for a raise come with promise that you can get more after you take on more responsibilities. This all seems reasonable except that you will end up taking on more work and then there is always some reason that you haven't earned what your manager promised. The bar is always moving and you never seem to measure up. Meanwhile leadership is selling projects on unrealistic timelines. The shortages of human and material resources seems to have no bearing on their decision to take on jobs. This leads to the constant fighting to get schedules to work amongst the project teams. It's almost criminal how leadership has pitted the groups against each other.

Pros

They pay you on time.

Cons

Supervisors are unskilled and unknowledgeable. Poor performance with the jobs of the people they supervise, general supervision, training or assisting. Supervisors most times cannot do the jobs of the employees below them. They make things up, sometimes illegally and power trip. They will make you do multiple jobs for the same pay. Will pay you less than the person you trained.

Pros

Immediate manager seems to care Great place to get more experience and do some traveling

Cons

Lack of upward mobility. There are no openings for promotion. They tend to hire from the outside for the more senior positions. From talking to my manager there was no way to get a raise without quitting. Seems like a broken policy. Seemingly uncaring leadership. There are a ton of issues with customers strong arming us, site management not helping with anything, project managers don't make realistic schedules or take input, and many other systemic things. Some groups are blaringly defective. Project management seem afraid to tell their leader the truth so they cover up problems by pushing us to do unrealistic efforts. The group in charge of the sorters have major quality issues that causes lots of travel and finger pointing. Travel. It's fun and you learn a lot seeing the systems but it's exhausting because they don't have enough people to rotate you out when you're tired or sick.

rough times ahead

Pros

Good job security in controls. You do your job and that of half the company. No shortage of work, they keep you moving from site to site. Great place to get a lot of experience fast. Just not a great place to stay long.

Cons

They work you hard. You work more than forty hours per week but don't really get that time back. Just two days at best. Department management seems to undermine lower management regularly. I'm told I'll be doing one thing by my manager and minutes later I'll get a call from someone else that I need to go do something else. It doesn't seem like they talk much. From my short time here it's clear controls is leaned on for everything. It seems like half the company can't do their job unless we give them all the data we put together in pretty little sheets for them. I do not know if they can not read or what but it puts a lot of stress on the more senior guys here. If we have more senior leadership at the company it's not apparent. The other groups like project management and validation seem to do whatever on sites with no consequences. They are open about saying they just come out to have something to charge their time to. I don't see how leadership would allow that but it happens a lot from what I hear. Growth seems to be fueled by a few people working really hard with lots of others just coming along for the ride.

Not the cream to the top!

Pros

It used to be steady work for a number of years. more on that in the cons. Used to be a good company to work for. Fun people used to work here.

Cons

The work is no longer steady and the out look is bleak for business. They failed to adapt to the supply chain and now we can't get the basics to do jobs. No we can't get steel or other basic parts to do what needs to be done. The company struggles with long term vision and leadership and this is just the tip of the iceberg of problems. The people I used to like working slowly all left for totally preventable reasons. Slightly better compensation, less travel, more vacation time, better management, etc. All things that should have been obvious signs if anyone at the top actually read the exit interviews. Now you just feel like another cog in the wheel of a mega corp that really is't that big. instead of taking care of the people that built things they bring in new people at a higher rate with more titles. Most of the time they manage to higher the smooth talkers and they just can't perform. One look at our R&D department and it's clear. If people tend to stick to their own kinds than there is no saving this company from itself. The slick talkers just keep saying how great they are and they get promoted. Does any manager or executive actually fact check what these people are saying about how good they are before hiring or promoting them? It doesn't seem like it. Maybe they don't care as long as they drink the water and keep giving each other promotions.
