Typical retail

Pros

- Decent PTO and personal/sick day program - Lot of opportunities outside of being in stores; admin, specialists, operations, HR, warehouses, etc. Have to serve your time in stores first though. - You’ll meet a lot of good people

Cons

- No work life balance. 10-12 hour days, weekends, holidays, closing. Getting texts on your day off. - Long days of dealing with complaining people and chasing silly metrics. - Executive division management seems to be getting further and further away from reality. - The ASM salary probably isn’t enough to justify the pressure and stress. Walmart and Meijer both pay more to ASMs. If you’re going the retail route, you should lean more in their direction.

Pros

Good people, impactful work. No shortage of ambitious projects for those looking for a challenge.

Cons

Culture has declined drastically in recent years. The leaders making timeline commitments are siloed from the actual work, leaving engineers to burn out trying to meet unrealistic deadlines with minimal structural support. Extremely meeting heavy, with discussions often favoring harmony over honesty. Non-existent work/life balance.

Pros

Great coworkers/managers, easy job, good benefits and decent starting pay

Cons

High turnover rate, occasional cold communication, poor work/life balance, bad work days and hours, no room for professional growth, outdated technology, no pay increase aside from inflation-countering raises with an endless increase in responsibilities.

Great Company

Pros

They have great benefits and bonus. Some good managers and teams.

Cons

Recent changes eliminated remote work flexibility despite many roles being fully capable of being performed remotely. This has made work life balance more challenging for employees managing families, caregiving responsibilities, and medical appointments. Leadership decisions sometimes feel disconnected from the day to day realities of employees who are balancing both professional and personal responsibilities. The higher ups are people that are much older and seem to loss touch of what being a parent means.
