Pros

Fun Environment , Best People , Awesome Management , Opportunities to learn , Easy to switch roles , managers are really competent and not some from 90's . So many genius people around that some times you feel you are not worth of your life. The new campus makes you awww. HR is very cooperative. Efficient departments , not much red tapes , provides developers the bets of the best machines on a day notice , no money issue for such things ,some people has got 200$ key boards and 200$ head phones in past. Management tries consciously to keep developers happy. Flexible hours of work , can work remotely ...

Cons

Not much I can think of ... But company size has grown too fast in last 2 years and some times hiring has not been up to so mark. The people hired before Q1 2006 are much more competitive (not always of course). Company is cutting down expenses on free lunches and dinners but rightly so as dinners were misused most of the time. Some times decisions are taken too fast in opposite directions and have kept developers on feet always to come up with new rapid strategies. Much more emphasize on competition in 2007 onwards so have to get best solution in minimal time and some times there is too much stress due to work but over all it is not that bad because management is cooperative so they give you time off if you have worked some week end.

Pros

VMware is a big company but in many ways had a startup vibe. That was great because the resources and infrastructure of a big company were there, but it gave most people I worked with freedom to work on many projects, influence, move around, and contribute in many ways. Plus, many things moved faster than they might at other companies of the same size. Perks were really great including bonuses, events on the campus, opportunities, etc.

Cons

The biggest con is the annual layoff. During most of the years I was there, we were growing like crazy, beating expectations, gaining in stock price, etc. It was always positive and upward. However, every single January, it was known that there would be a round of layoffs, even when all numbers were looking great as they almost always were. Management called it restructuring. But, over the years, some really good people were let go for no apparent reason. Then to add insult to injury, a week or two later, there would be a company quarterly meeting discussing how VMware was doing so well and is still hiring, but they had to make some changes. It always felt dishonest and the sympathy for those let go came across as disingenuous.
