Pros

Good Pay, decent benefits, really interesting projects. First few years the culture here was 1st rate, but it seems like that has been changing rapidly.

Cons

Turn over of senior leadership in last 2 or 3 years has had a marked impact on culture. And they love marketing their culture. But they lost a good amount of the grey hairs that created that culture and called younger people up from farm system to fill the role... Perhaps too few, perhaps too young, perhaps wrong mindset. Don't know that for sure. Just know that ideas like cooperation and teamwork have been quietly replaced by a focus on competition. Younger leaders are very ambitious. Not terribly wise. In the last year your hear competition out of their mouths a lot. It's created an environment where people horde information, hide stuff from each other to protect their own position. Generally just making everybody a little more paranoid. It isn't hard to imagine that in five years this place will become another meat grinder like Kiewit with little regional lords ruling over fiefdoms. Doesn't help that they've cut the bonus program to the bone and been stepping back benefits every year.... while the ownership is buying themselves private jets and second homes.

Pros

In my tenure within the IT department, I had the privilege of working under an exceptional manager whose leadership qualities were unparalleled. The scope of work was broad, and he played a pivotal role in advancing my career in IT significantly. He fostered a culture of learning and growth, guiding us with the aim of preparing us to eventually step into leadership roles ourselves, equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. Under his mentorship, I gained valuable experience and was entrusted with management-related tasks, enhancing my professional profile and enabling me to add significant managerial experience to my resume. My time in the Information Technology department at Traylor Bros., Inc. was an incredibly enriching phase of my career, for which I am profoundly grateful.

Cons

Navigating the political landscape within this organization presents a considerable challenge. It appears that recognition and value are often correlated with tenure and direct financial contribution to the company. As someone within the information technology department, I've observed that our work is sometimes perceived merely as a cost center rather than a strategic asset. However, there is significant potential for a shift in perspective. If management were to embrace IT as a catalyst for innovation, focusing on application development and leveraging technology to streamline operations, the company could transform into a dynamic and forward-thinking workplace. It's also important to address the company culture shaped by those at the top. The Division Managers and the brothers who own the company have a tendency towards an authoritarian style, which can manifest in condescension during times of stress or disagreement. A change in this attitude could foster a more respectful and collaborative environment.
