A great place to get your boot in the door and start working. Typical Retail Cons, your Team Members will vary. - Sales Floor Team Member Target Employee Review

Pros

If there's one thing that I loved most about working at Target, it was my Team Members. They were overall, very encouraging and helpful. My STL (Store Team Leader), a few ETLs (Executive Team Leaders), and most of the Team Leads were respectful, had great uplifting personalities, and were always glad to be a part of the team. I had an awesome team, and when I left, I was definitely able to befriend a few of them and they were always happy to be references for future employment. I'll say this again and again, but YOUR personality and how you treat others is going to affect how your team treats you too. If you're a kind and respectful person, you'll probably be OK. Schedule can be flexible, but expect black-out dates for holidays. Work hard, stick with your friendlier team members, make new friends, and do your best to stay positive. As I see it, use this opportunity to jump-start yourself into the working world, if you have never held a job before. If you have, the same still applies. Be friendly, suck in the negativity, and learn to ignore what the ignorant guests/team members say (unless you are being hurt of course, then report that crud right away).

Cons

Your team environment and attitude WILL PROBABLY VARY! Talk to some team members before you apply at your local Target. Some will probably be pessimistic, sure, you'll always have that at retail, but just see if that particular culture is something you could fit into. Your attitude will also determine how others treat you. Always remember this, and just be friendly, hold back your grudges. Working in retail can be stressing, especially on busy weekends and holidays. You'll have to keep that smile on, and be respectful of the worst guests you encounter, both over the phone and in the store. Training was threadbare for some areas. As someone new to retail and generally shy I was worried, but it's still something most people should be able to pick up, just try to stick with your team and learn to make new friends. They shouldn't expect you to know everything just a few weeks in, in any case. However, ALWAYS ASK IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT SOMETHING! ALWAYS! Don't worry about what the "elite" team members will think, they had to go through the same crud, and if they scoff, that says a lot more about them than it does about you. Some days we were strapped for people, and ended up having to jump into other positions to fill in for late or absent team members, you should expect some crazy days like this anyways, it's going to happen and you'll be put into cashiering after running around the sales floor, then back again to help tons of guests waiting for a free team member. Overall, expect to have the general long hours of retail if you sign on for full time, getting extended a few hours, etc., but look forward to having a team that can help you through it. Its not a bad place to work in my opinion, but it's not quite a place you'd want to spend more than a couple of years at, unless you really want to move up into team management. Movement up into ETL positions is very rare, you will need a college degree for that. Pay isn't great, honestly I'm one of those who definitely believes in slightly (not insanely) higher wages for those of us working our backs off and listening to guests scream about the corporate-level decisions of Target in our ears, but having $1 above minimum wage was better than well, minimum. Some positions pay more than others, but usually not by much unless you are a team lead or ETL (salaried there). You have yearly opportunities to get a raise, but from what I was told, that's not by more than .25 cents, if that. Could possibly vary based on position.
