Pros
-Co-workers are great. Have met some really awesome, nice people! -Health insurance and free coffee is a good bonus. -Nice getting to know the customers who are kind and talkative. -Store management trained me well and are very helpful and understanding, i.e. with any mistakes, the roster, etc. -Interesting to learn about the various coffees around the world. -Impressive Fairtrade initiatives. -Decent potential for advancement in store, i.e. becoming a shift supervisor. I have been told many times that it is highly political getting to the higher levels, but cannot personally confirm this.
Cons
-As a barista, it is a terrible payrate for the volume of work. In a 8 hour shift, the workload is relentless and you will rarely find time to catch your breath. Physical and mentally exhausting and not compensated by adequate pay. -Ignorant district and regional management float around cluelessly between stores. Always ready to criticize (and rarely praise) without having any idea of the pressure of working on the shop floor. They create enormous amounts of stress and anxiety among employees, both baristas and store management. -Like any other job in the food industry, prepare to be sometimes looked down upon and disrespected by customers. Make sure to value the customers who are worthwhile and kind. -"Mug Awards" are an inventive way of cheating the employee out of a cash bonus. I have received 3 of these in my short time at the store, due to my consistent work performance and ability to sell Starbucks cards. Ultimately, they mean nothing, and I feel cheated. -Stores open early, and close late. Starbucks is not for you if you're not a morning person! -A new waste program is desperately needed. Disposing such a large volume of food each day is unacceptable. Surely a scheme for the homeless could be created?
