Pros
Working as a designer at Macy's corporate will teach you the ropes on how to present creative ideas to execs, working within production timeline and partnering with cross functional teams - product, CAD, and technical design team
Cons
Macy's is a very corporate place to work. During my time here, the design team wasn't even allowed to wear jeans other than on Fridays (even the teams that designed casual or denim items). Creativity is encouraged but the focus is on more interpersonal skills (which is good thing) but not if you are seeking opportunities that value out of the box thinking and design concepts. The customer base is very stale and don't take well to concepts that are too far from what they know. The design teams aren't led by executives of diverse backgrounds (varies from brand to brand) and this shows in how persons of color are perceived and treated within their less than diverse teams. Getting promoted is not easy as the designers held on high regard have mostly worked their way through the ranks and have been their for quite sometime. If you work hard, and there is room - maybe you can get promoted. Much of the design work is reworking old tried and true bodies into semi new fabrics or maybe tweeking a trim. The body blocks are old and the same.
