Pros
The Higher Achievement programs provide safe space and academic enrichment for middle school students. The intentions behind the programs are good.
Cons
The organization did not, at the time that I was there, do a great job of investing in its in-house talent. Nearly every leadership position was filled by an outside person instead of providing upward mobility, professional development, and job satisfaction to people who were already there and doing the work. Credentials on paper should not trump the years someone has with the organization and the relationships they have with students, parents, and school leaders. There was a mass exodus of talented, passionate people because there was no clear path for growth or they were being overlooked or explicitly rejected for promotions that they absolutely deserved. People are already willing to overlook the meager salaries, but constantly being passed over for positions you know you deserve and are fully qualified for is just too much to bear.
