Pros
Smart coworkers Good salary Okay benefits
Cons
Working at Blue Origin was a challenging and harming experience that revealed significant issues, particularly in management practices. Despite the talented and intelligent coworkers who made the technical aspects of the job rewarding, the management culture often overshadowed these positive interactions. Management frequently did not take responsibility for problems, creating a toxic work environment. There were instances where managers publicly embarrassed employees during meetings, a tactic that was both unprofessional and damaging to team morale and individual confidence. Additionally, despite being in a hostile situation, I was not allowed to transfer to another team internally, which exacerbated the stress. Blue Origin positions itself as superior culture-wise to other companies like SpaceX, but my experience suggests they face similar, if not worse, issues regarding employee treatment. The expectation from many managers seemed to be that employees should sacrifice their personal lives to an extreme extent, metaphorically asking you to give up your firstborn child for the job. This kind of pressure severely impacted my mental health. If you’re set on joining Blue Origin, the Lunar Program may offer a better work environment. It is crucial to interview potential managers thoroughly to understand their management style and ensure they have adequate training and experience in leadership. One of the main concerns is that engineers are often promoted to managerial positions without proper training on how to manage teams, foster growth, or provide necessary resources. Overall, while Blue Origin has significant potential and is home to many brilliant and dedicated individuals, the management culture needs substantial improvement to become a supportive and effective workplace. The talented workforce deserves better leadership to truly thrive.
