Pros
If you need some money, the pay and the opportunity to earn is outstanding. $18 an hour, because there's always a house somewhere in need of workers, you can work (almost) as much as needed. I was working up to 80 hours a pay period, BY CHOICE. You're contributing to lives. If you want to do something meaningful, this is the place. Some of these youth really need somebody to listen to them and be there for them. You'll be laughing with them, crying with them, rooting for them, let me just add "some" of them. It's honestly a meaningful place, and opportunity to help the youth. The staff is working hard to bring light to diversity efforts, and make a safe space for folks of color. During the George Floyd riots of 2020, the job was very supportive to staff of color, and offered therapy and even paid 3 days off for black folks. That was pretty awesome. The effort is there, and that was beautiful to see.
Cons
There are no cameras, the minute these kids get mad at you, they WILL say or do something to get you fired, including alleging sexual assault, then they'll get their friends to corroborate their story. Some of these kids are sick in the head, and if they believe you done them wrong, they will try to stick a fork in you. This applies of course mainly if you're a male, however it's happened to women before too. On the other side, if you're a woman, you'll be called all types of b words, and everything else under the sun by a few of the kids. This field is not for the light hearted. The youth are encouraged, but not enforced to do anything with their lives, so I mean. Just come to work, babysit them, and go home. The youth face little to no disciplinary action, so you'll just be eating insults up, you can hope a write up will suffice, but most times they don't go far. If they don't do their chores, you'll have to do it for them, and just "write them up" for the 100th time that means nothing. Again, meaningful line of work, and great opportunity to get some money in your pocket. But these kids will look out for themselves, don't get attached to them, or fall for their sympathy trap. Staff is very gossipy and will spread rumors that you do drugs and slept with other people. Sometimes staff is worst than the kids.
