Pros

Call centre is really diverse. You will meet people from all walks of life. The CRA is actively hiring different types of people. For the most part, its a great atmosphere when you are not on the line. The pay is really good when compared to other call centre jobs. The benefits are amazing if you do decide to take advantages of them ( ie: 30% off Rogers plan for corporate accounts). It's downtown, right next to the Quartier des spectacles. Plenty of restaurants. You can move up if you have the will and know how to politic Team leaders, for the most part will try to help you if you have issues (family, work, etc) You will learn a lot about personal taxes. You will have access to people who know the Income Tax by heart. A lot of great insights that can potentially pay off.

Cons

High stress and will leave you drained out no matter who you are. People do not like calling the CRA. They don't call because they want to but because the need to. People become clueless when it comes to taxes. This includes everybody from newly arrived immigrants to CEOs of huge corporations. If you don't have any patience, you will not survive. No time for social activities within work hours. You are expected and timed to be on the phone for a set amount of time. Forget about getting any kind of job security for the first 2 years. Horrible pay system (Phoenix). If you have any problems with your pay, no one in the whole building can help you because they have centralized the control to other departments of the Canadian government. Team leaders are generally nice people but they don't have any kind of power. All they do send emails when you have an issue but you are responsible with the replies. I still don't understand what they do when we don't have issues except talk to other team leaders.

Pros

The best thing about working here is the benefits and training. The benefits are your pension plan, sick leave, 3 weeks vacation to start, plus 2 personal days. You even get a week off if you get married which doesn't count as vacation. If you want to up your credentials they will also pay for your tuition so long as it is related to a job in CRA (could be current or future carrer goal job) and the course leads to a degree Learning new jobs and getting exposure to how other Canadians make a living and seeing the overall big picture of the economy from behind the scenes is also a added bonus IMO.

Cons

Recognition for good work is very poor and leads to eventual job dissatisfaction. Well… They do say thank you a lot, but just a thank you for your hard work year after year feels like a letdown. No pizza or coffee at the yearly meetings. In fact on public service day everyone just gets HALF a sub. Like really – half? Also advancement will feel largely out of your control.. You may get great work reviews and be highly “valued” by the team leader and manager for your productivity, but when it comes to being considered for another job or promotion you have to apply when a notice goes out. And you have to do some tests and you are hired based on your score on the test. Your ranking on your performance review isn’t really used to consider you for promotion. You simply have to pass your review to be considered. So if you’re highly productive and get flying colours on your review, you’re still in the same boat as the people who barely passed their review. After that “check” passes, the distinguishing factor is your mark on a test which is usually about policy or procedure on the job you are applying for. Yet if you do end up getting the job you will be fully trained at 7.5 hour days for 2-3 weeks making the test look elementary. So the test totally stressed everyone out because everyone studies like crazy and it just takes a few wrong answers to screen yourself out. Like you'll still pass the test (get 60%) and get confirmation that you will be considered for future opportunities, but if you don't score 90% or higher, your likely out of luck unless they plan to hire A LOT of people (like very close to everyone who applied). And some questions are just ridiculous that you would never ever memorize because if you did work involving that stuff you would have the manual in front of you working it. For example a question might be what is the maximum allowable credit for BLANK? Yet by chance you didn't memorize that because it was so specific and burried in the procedures.. so it’s like. Darn!! And you can’t really guess.

Pros

Benefits Overtime Pay Being able to work from home due to COVID 19

Cons

Micromanaged Contracts are constantly cut short and you can be moved to any department such as Call Centre regardless of your position and where you applied originally. SP04 pay is not worth it Constantly taking phone calls with no time to catch your breath or downtime Team leaders will do anything to force you to get accommodation meaning if you go to the bathroom a lot of or feel sick. You require a special need for this. Team leaders will listen to your calls and give you a review of how you can approve it's pretty much your not meeting CRA expectations because you have to take calls one after the other and ensuring industry standards by knowing everything the taxpayer is asking.
