Great small company

Pros

The team is small but efficient. Most of the employees I worked with had been with the organization for some time and had a lot of cohesion. The execs were part of day to day operations and drove the business on a day to day. But day to day did not mean micro managed. I generally felt everyone had a job and worked to move things forward each day.

Cons

Not many that I can think of. There is only so much growth with a business that is efficient with low turn over.

Pros

1) Since it's not a very large company (based on number of employees), the people you see and work with everyday begin to feel like family. 2) There was one year when I worked there that we did some fun employee recognition-centered activities; one time we had a picnic, or we would go bowling. 3) Management doesn't hide in their office much, they get out and talk to the employees and seem genuinely interested in getting to know the people that work for them. 4) They'll pretty much hire anyone, so if you're desperate for a job they're a good place to apply.

Cons

1) As I mentioned in #1 in the 'Pros' section, working at BlueToad is similar to working with your family. In some ways it's great, but it's also dysfunctional. Personal issues would sometimes trump professionalism. Not only with low-level employees but also management. You always knew it if one manager was feuding with another. 2) Weird upper management/employee boundaries and relationships - there were some weird boundary/relationship issues that they had with the previous CEO years ago, but the boundaries I'm referring to are different - upper management will treat some employees as friends and invite them to gatherings, etc. outside of the office. The upper management/employee lines get blurred. It was weird coming to work and hearing your coworkers talking about how they partied with upper management over the weekend, and some of the things I learned about management as a result of those conversations are things that made me view them in a negative light. Management never hid that they were friends with some employees outside of work. Interestingly, those were the employees that seemed to get better raises and perks compared to the rest of us. 3) Because they value a family-like feel, they tend to hire a lot of friends and significant others of existing employees, which is great until there's a blowout with the friend/significant other. The company isn't very big, so the tension is felt and it affects everyone. 4) Upper management is a boy's club - if you're female, you won't make it to those ranks.

BlueToad Response

We appreciate the positive comments and will otherwise always take a serious look at constructive feedback about the company and culture. While I am responding a bit late, as the CEO, I'm unaware of your specific complaints being a real issue here. We are by no means a perfect company, but I am proud of our professionalism and team environment. Unfortunately, glassdoor has developed into a platform for employees to publicly vent after leaving a company - many times unfairly. As the employer, we are left little choice but to respond in some way to each posting. However, absent actively pushing happy employees to post to the site, glassdoor rarely reflects the thoughts and feelings of the majority. You simply cannot please everyone and that is a fact of life. Thanks again for the feedback, and good luck in your future employment.
