Downward spiral, stay away.

Pros

Health/dental are insanely good, but don't take a lot of time off. Clients can be cool and there are great networking opportunities to bounce and work at their funds.

Cons

Client numbers aren't right a lot of the time. Read that sentence again. People managers on the venture team are inexperienced and unreceptive to feedback, even though it is frequently asked for. Middle and upper managers actively fight against changes that would improve the workplace, and instead use feedback as a weapon against the employees that give it. Textbook toxic environment. High egos at the manager level and above, and unclear or unrealistic expectations which makes the work environment difficult to navigate, expect to manage upward. Hours are pretty insane, compensation is below market. Little to no career progression opportunities unless you're a manager's favorite. Senior management has a focus on moving up market but lacks industry knowledge to understand what's required to do so. As a result the product is severely under-developed for management's target clients, and the core infrastructure receives little to no investment in development. Burnout culture is common, but problematic as this is a high-context industry and company which requires employees to ramp up for 6-12 months before their contributions become meaningful. The company has a hard time hanging on to employees for their ramp up period and there have been many departures within the employee's first year on the job (~50% of hires on the venture associate team in the last 18 months). There is a huge churn problem but it's viewed as culling the herd instead of a red flag. Most of the original, smart and highly knowledgable employees have moved on leaving a knowledge gap. The general caliber of employee AngelList is able to attract has gone down.

A Career Misstep

Pros

You will work with incredibly talented people, and build a strong network through the customers you manage. Comp & Benefits are above par.

Cons

Direct management is very immature, discouraging, and uninterested in your WLB. You will get overworked and burnt out, and receive very little recognition for your contributions.

Bizzare Culture

Pros

The benefits were awesome. Most the people you work with are great. Remote work with unlimited time off.

Cons

There was a very odd culture there. Management believes in the 'keepers' test, where you will be reviewed quarterly if they would fight to keep you. Management initially came across as caring, but later showed that it is a facade. They encourage folks to openly ask questions but then will use it against you during reviews. All in all, I think management is lacking the skills needed to set their people up for success (i.e. assigning tasks that all have the same deadline with high stakes, whereas others have a healthy balance of tasks throughout their day with only one or two with deadlines spread apart, etc). All in all, seems like a great company but left feeling disappointed starting around half my tenure there.

Amazing company at the center of tech

Pros

Smart, friendly, hardworking team driven by the mission of solving start-ups' most valuable problems at scale. Lots of career opportunities and flexible working styles. Generous compensation and transparent management. All the usual top-teir tech perks (nice office, meals, fun off-sites, in-house masseuse, etc.) The culture is the perfect balance of drive and fun. Access to AngelList's network makes it probably the best place to start a career in VC or tech.

Cons

I honestly love working here. No complaints.

Inside of Venture Capital--not always a pretty picture.

Pros

This isn't an easy sector to scale a company, but the people working on it are super talented and unique. There is a lot of potential.

Cons

While salary and equity are rewarding, a simple "nice job" from management at the company can be worth a lot--not a place that celebrates wins.

Pros

Smart colleagues, lots of autonomy for employees, get to work with interesting customers (venture capital investors and startup founders)

Cons

Management fosters a borderline ruthless culture of evaluating people. Generally unforgiving of mistakes and quick to pass judgement on people. Some employees will thrive, others will really struggle, and most will be ready to move on after a year or two.

Lost at sea

Pros

Skilled and talented colleagues, contributing to a dynamic work environment. Support staff and network in place provide valuable resources and assistance, enhancing overall productivity and workflow. Angellist's name brand recognition holds value in the industry

Cons

Management lacks clear direction, often favoring those who align with their own perspectives. The top-down work culture at times can create a challenging and potentially toxic environment. While the UI is aesthetically pleasing, the product offerings are often subpar and not as transparent as they could be. Often, riddled with inaccuracies.

Pros

Great pay and benefits, nice off-sites and monthly events

Cons

Though working as an engineer at AngelList seems like a perfect job on paper, there's many red flags that surface within the first few weeks of working here. The culture is highly competitive with your teammates willing to throw you under the bus for their own sake. Work/life balance is unheard of. Management claims to care about helping you grow in your career but is unable to provide actionable feedback. You may provide your own feedback to your manager, but it will go nowhere as management is stuck in their ways and unwilling to change. Also any feedback or questions you ask will be used against you in your review. There is inconsistent direction from higher management on where things are heading and constant shifts in what to work on. This results in nice looking products that aren't always reliably built. I'd recommend staying as far away as you can.
