Decent, but leadership needs improvement

Pros

- Work-life balance - Altus Days - Generous benefits and parental leave - Assessments, research and other projects are really interesting. The company is growing quickly. - Most teams are friendly, smart and hard-working

Cons

I don't think the current CEO is the right person to lead this company. The people he has chosen to be at the leadership table is bit of a mixed bag. When you have no proven experience in HR or corporate strategy, including how to scale a company, I don't see how you could expect to attract good people, keep the good people who haven't already left, and actually compete in the market. Too many exits in a short period of time. I'll admit some of these people needed to go, but very good talent also left because they were unfairly judged as unfit to be part of the company's next stage of growth. There is no transparency when it comes to performance reviews, raises and promotions. These things need to be standardized and in line with what's in the market.

Thank you for your review! We’re always looking for ways to optimise our employee experience so we’re delighted to hear that you are feeling the positive effects of those efforts. We’ve been sad to see some faces leave Altus of late but recognise that many of them were here for a long time, helped to shape Altus into what it is today and went on to new opportunities which better aligned with their career goals moving forward. We recognise that historically, we may not have communicated as clearly as employees would like when it comes to our processes around performance reviews, raises and promotions - we’ve been developing these processes over time and with the People & Culture team growing significantly over the last year, we’re well equipped to improve this moving forward; hopefully you’re already seeing this in action through recent All Hands and Kick Off presentations! Rich has grown Altus tremendously over the last 7 years as our CEO but recognises that he isn’t an expert in every facet of running a business and as such, we’ve hired a number of leaders to build a leadership team with complementary skills and experience to ensure that Altus is setup for success as we continue to grow. We encourage you to share your feedback through avenues such as TinyPulse, your manager, confidentially with a member of the P&C team or with Rich directly if you have concerns that we may be able to address - we’re always open to suggestions!

Pros

Really amazing coworkers - everyone truly is a delight to work with! I love my immediate team, and whenever I interface with people from other teams I am very grateful the company hires and attracts such excellent individuals. Fantastic benefits and generous vacation policy! Everyone is very encouraging about taking enough time off, and making time to benefit from the professional and personal development funds. The company is also working on clearer career development paths and implementing transparent pay bands. Exciting trajectory! Last year, the company had acquired and merged with another company and it took some time to understand how to adapt both to the increased scope and size. The larger company recently rebranded to reflect these changes, increased scope, and path forward, and there is a clearer sense of identity. I am genuinely excited to see what the future holds! Appreciative and considerate of feedback! Since the start of the year, Acuity has noticeably improved its initiative planning and communication across teams. Personally (and especially in my team), I feel like my insights are taken into account and I can see how actionable steps are taken as a result.

Cons

Navigating the fast growth of the company (as well as the 2022 economic climate) has been difficult. The company, like many other fast growing startups, has seen a lot of turnover. I love working remotely and for me, the fact that Acuity is remote-first is a great advantage! However, this can lead to feelings of being isolated / siloing. Slack/Zoom are not the same as just asking someone a quick question in person.

Pros

- Company is filled with wonderful and caring people who are true team players. A fun and collegial atmosphere with frequent interaction with other stakeholders - Good oversight and support from managers - Great onboarding experience - Good work/life balance - Generous benefits and generous vacation - The company has handled the covid-induced remote transition very well, and has done many things to concretely demonstrate concern for employees in these challenging times - Generous allowance for personal/professional development - Both pro and a con; everyone is encouraged to occasionally pitch in to assist with certain operational activities. On the upside, this gives a sense of connection to the mission of the company, fosters a sense of camaraderie, and adds variety to one's routine - The dev perspective is always welcome in broader discussions regarding product. Great leadership on tech team - Devs work with a variety of interesting technologies; the stack is fairly modern (but there's room for improvement in this regard) - Company is very financially stable, and is growing quickly

Cons

- Product suffers from a serious 'too many cooks in the kitchen' problem; the dev/product team is responsible for delivering solutions that aim to satisfy a massive variety of stakeholders, both internal and external (and the objectives of these stakeholders are not always aligned with one another). As such, the dev/product team has to contend with tons of noise, has to deal with rapidly shifting priorities, and often has to deliver highly customized and non-scalable solutions. There is new leadership on the tech team so there is some cause for optimism regarding these issues. - The downside of having to pitch in with various operational activities is that it could be considered a distraction from developing in one's role - The company is very vocal about DEI matters, but has conspicuously non-diverse leadership

Some good people, bad management and products

Pros

Colleagues were god, some very smart and hardworking people. The marketing team was a little clueless after the VP left, but found ways to work. Altus days (Acuity days now, I guess, if it's still there) were good. Everyone I worked wanted to and put in genuine efforts for the company to be successful, with little belief in the product.

Cons

We had some layoffs in Oct. 2022 and were informed that there will be no further layoffs. There were more layoffs in Feb. 2023 including people on maternity leave! The senior management is clueless. They do not have vision for products, hire and fire on whims. Only founders believe in the products. Product team feels a little discriminatory with the head bringing people from his last organization, firing others and favouring white people.

Thank you for sharing your experience and observations with us and the Glassdoor community. The decision to reduce the team, putting our business on a path to sustainable and responsible growth, impacted so many people - in tangible and intangible ways. We acknowledge the financial and emotional impact on those who lost their jobs. It affected their lives and livelihoods in ways we will never fully know and understand. Our remaining team has benefited from learning the broader context behind the decisions and factors that created conditions for our layoffs. The people directly impacted will understandably have different perspectives and feelings about what happened. If you feel you can benefit from a follow-up conversation or if we can support you in any way, please reach out to someone you feel safe talking to on our team or contact me (Tine) at thaugen@acuityinsights.com.
