The Laboratory Safety Unit (LSU) is a central university unit under the Office of the Vice-President (Research) that oversees safety and regulatory compliance matters pertaining to teaching and research laboratory activities.
The appointee will support senior members of LSU in carrying out responsibilities related to the services, projects, and programmes run by the LSU. S/he will be given the opportunity to receive significant professional development to gain relevant professional experience and qualify for different safety professional recognitions.
- Overseeing the implementation of laboratory safety management programs, including biological safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, laser safety, laboratory design reviews, pre-occupancy inspections, risk management, and research safety;
- Conducting regular safety inspections in on-campus and off-campus university laboratories and preparing comprehensive reports;
- Investigating laboratory-related incidents and accidents and preparing detailed investigation reports;
- Overseeing and managing laboratory safety databases, electronic systems, and e-platforms;
- Overseeing the occupational hygiene program, including respiratory protection and workplace hazard assessments;
- Leading and advising on exposure assessments and evaluating health hazards;
- Providing high-level administrative support to LSU and relevant Safety Committees, and supervising a technical team delivering professional services;
- Monitoring laboratory safety compliance; analysing safety performance data, and reporting findings to laboratory safety committees;
- Providing strategic advice on laboratory design and space planning and ensuring compliance for high-impact initiatives and new off-campus facilities; and
- Performing any other duties as assigned.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Chemistry/Occupational Hygiene or related disciplines, with a minimum of 10 years’ relevant safety experience at managerial/specialist levels, preferably in tertiary institutions, statutory bodies, government agencies, or large corporations with a laboratory environment;
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua) and good communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Power BI, and Canva are required.
- Experience in a safety office of a research tertiary institution with a laboratory environment and possession of a legal studies or law diploma, is highly preferable.
- Preference will be given to candidates with relevant international safety qualifications, including Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) and Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH).
- Knowledge of the ServiceNow Interface would be an advantage.
Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
