      Software Engineer Interview

      13 Jun 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Visa Inc. (Austin, TX) in May 2021

      Interview

Recruiter was responsive at first, but then ghosted me after a point even during the set up of an interview, had a coordinator do it all ultimately. So negative there. Then came the interview. Manager was really nice, she's cool. Answered all her questions. Then came the panel interview. Went good at first with the 1st person (but didn't ask me anything frontend), but then the 2nd person, a female interviewer wanted me to go on video for whatever reason (she was not on video, ever). I didn't want to as I prefer to keep bias out of interviews but she insisted. So i complied. The irony of her questions however: this was for a frontend development role and she didn't ask me anything about it. Instead she asked my java exclusive questions and database questions. All of which I answered. i think she was trying to trick me, thinking I was simply a frontend developer (my background is fullstack, surprise). So I'm sure she was surprised when I provided her with the SQL query exactly like she requested, lol. Anyway, I'm still on cam and the next guy comes on. Again, backend questions, but at least finally we do an algo question and i answer it, including the edge case. But again nothing frontend. Finally the last person, and FINALLY FRONTEND QUESTIONS. Goes well, and we hit off great and he even mentioned that he'd be advocating for my hiring. Weeks pass, nothing. I'm pretty sure the 2nd and possibly the 3rd interviews just gave the thumbs down on me, even though they did not do their due diligence and judge me equally against others based on the FRONTEND role. Super disappointing experience, I felt like i was discriminated against to be quite frank and honest. That's what it felt like. Visa has a very low percentage number of Latino engineers (look it up), the majority who are White/Asian (south and east). It's ironic because this was for a position in Austin, and Latinos will be majority again in Texas come 2022 and beyond, yet only make 11% of Visa's US workforce (I'm sure it's even less among the engineering division, even less globally) Anyway, Visa ghosted mea in the end. Not even a sorry we decided to move forward with someone else. you know the usual stuff, but not even that. Which is cringe coming from a global company as big as they are. I ended up taking an offer at Morgan Stanley ultimately since Visa just vanished.

      Interview

The interview process started with a coding test from Hackerrank with 2 easy and 1 intermediate question. I found the questions to be rather difficult given that you are not allowed to use google or check syntax.
