      Software Developer Interview

      14 Jun 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Nordstrom (Los Angeles, CA) in Jun 2015

      Interview

Interview was held in their downtown LA Location. The hiring manager Raj was a very cool guy. Seemed very down to earth. His team were a mixture of laid back guys, show off types (the Asian guys) and some frustrated guys (release & QA managers). I like the way they interviewed. They were not interested in asking stupid questions like "What is an interface. What is a generic". We can all read a book and memorize all that nonsense. They wanted to see how I thought, how I resolved issues and how I handled pressure. That to me is far more important than asking what is this and what is that. They did grill me, but they wanted to make sure I would be a good match for their team both on a technical and at a human level. They're not just obsessed about bringing drones in from India. But I did get the impression their developers were very limited in their skill set. Two of the guys I was speaking to, only knew middleware coding. When I bought up questions about AngularJS, they had no idea as to what I was talking about. Full stack developers they are not. I could see someone getting frustrated with the limited technology stack used quite quickly.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How would you architect a system like Twitter. Explain every level in detail. Have you used TPL for threading in a C# environment (not really much to talk about here). Explain the different Bindings when using WCF. Explain how to check expressions (start vs stop).
