      Entry Level Software Engineer Interview

      24 Apr 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at IBM (Austin, TX) in Feb 2026

      Interview

I applied to this and a handful of other jobs. Many of them sent me assessments which I did and passed. This one followed up with a 30 min interview request. For some reason any scheduling was done ping-ponging between their recruitment supervisor and 2 different workers in Mumbai. This ping-ponging led to me being sent the wrong time. I waited for an hour and emailed the US email but they didn't respond. The next day I emailed the US email again and they apologized and restarted the process. It again bounced to Mumbai but this time they sent me and my interviewer the same time frame. My interviewer was nice, but he expected me to have been told it was a technical interview which I was not. Their recruitment specifically made his title in the scheduler 'technical interview' and mine 'event interview'. I already did an assessment, and the interview was 30 m so it was pretty obviously an HR interview timeframe. He did both hr questions then a live coding question that he only reserved the last 10 minutes for. Their interview assessment website was broken, so he asked me to find an alternative and share my screen. I kindly did, including explaining to him how to give me permission to share my screen in teams. The question he only told me verbally. The question itself was simple now that I found the leetcode version, but the interviewer, despite my positive attitude and clarity in my questions, did not give me that same clarity in the 'given' function that I couldn't see because their website was broken. I ended up having to operate at a very high level to get us through the process of one interview, their employees failing me at every single stage. Including them not even getting back to me. He told me if I didn't hear back, to email in one week. I asked who to email, him ? Or the recruitment emails. He said absolutely not him, recruitment. I did so, they still ghosted me. Extremely demoralizing and damaging to ibms credit in my mind. It's now been 3 months so it's clear they've concluded the process and I'm not going to get any feedback or response. On a personal note, the missed interview where we were both sent wrong times was my actual birthday.

      Interview

This was the first virtual interview I had, and the interviewer didn't ask me any questions instead he asked me to give an impromptu presentation on a project that I worked on. For the first interview it would have been nice to get a heads-up to create a presentation or be prepared to start coding a project in front of someone.

Open a text editor and start going through and coding a project you worked on.

      Interview

The first round was a behavioral interview where they asked about my background, my hobbies, and my early career plans. They asked about a project listed in one of my work experiences, but the project was related to the work of the role.

45 min virtual 1:1 interview with a senior engineer manager. In my case, I only had 1 round of interview. Some might have more than one interview, usually around 2 rounds of interviews.
