      Software Engineer Interview

      16 Nov 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot in Oct 2017

      Interview

The interview process started pretty positively. After a recruiter screen, I was given their coding challenge. You can read more about it in detail with some other reviews here. It was unique and more interesting than your standard data structure Hackerrank question. I completed it and my recruiter arranged my interview time. Due to distance, I was scheduled for a remote interview. My interview consisted of two rounds, a laptop coding challenge and system design question. The questions were very similar to some questions others have posted here. Both interviewers were friendly and knowledgeable. Things went south from here. I was told to expect a call regarding their decision within 2 business days. I sent a follow up email 3 business days after the interview asking for an update. My recruiter calls the next day apologetic explaining they had just had a change in management which caused things to get delayed. I was understanding here, not a big deal. I was given a verbal offer and told to expect a written offer 2 business days after that. 3 business days pass and I have yet to receive the offer. I sent another followup and was told there was an issue with legal and they'd get back to me shortly. 1 business day after that, I send another follow up and am told they just "had a change in their system." I'm told to expect the written offer in latest EOD 1 day later. By now, I'm frustrated with the lack of clarity. After reading the reports here of people getting their interviews cancelled due to spots being filled up, it really smells like they gave me an offer they aren't sure they have space for. I finally get the written offer, 2 days after they promised (and more than a week than initially promised). From there, I'm given an exploding offer (4 business days). The offer had some really vague wording regarding a non compete I wanted to clarify. I contacted my recruiter in asking for an offer extension and clarification on the offer itself. I was never given a response after 2 emails. For a company that claims to be transparent, the lack of communication at the very end really turned me off from the company. Looking back, it felt like all the excuses they gave me were smokescreens to stall. Even if they were valid, the lack of communication after receiving my written offer was very offputting. On a smaller note, for a company of Hubspot's size, the compensation was a bit disappointing ($35/hr + $3k housing bonus).

Hi there, thanks so much for taking the time to write a review and I'm so sorry for the frustration you've experienced in your recruiting process - what you've described couldn't be further from the standards we aspire to live by in our process. We do interview a good number of people for this role; however, it's not an excuse for the lack of communication and lack of clarity. Please know that our recruiting team and Engineering leadership team are aware of this situation and we're working to identify ways to mitigate any issues in our process in the future. While it sounds like you've already made your decision not to join us, I'd welcome the opportunity to hear your feedback in more detail and see if there are any other learnings that can come out of your experience - if you're comfortable with it, please send me an email at beckym at hubspot dot com and we can find a time to chat. Again, I'm deeply sorry for your negative experience and appreciate your feedback so that we can work to get better. Sincerely, Becky

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through university. I interviewed at HubSpot (London, England)

      Interview

I went through several rounds, including an initial screening, a technical assessment, and follow-up interviews. The process was well structured, but I found the technical part challenging because it required both problem-solving and clear communication under time pressure. The interviewers were professional, and the questions were relevant to the role. Although I did not receive an offer, the experience was still valuable and helped me understand the company’s expectations better.
