      Business Analyst Interview

      11 Jul 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Denver, CO
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Gusto (Denver, CO) in Jul 2024

      Interview

There were 6 rounds of interviews. All of the interviewers were members of Sales leadership, which I found odd. The most odd part was my Business Analyst skills assessment was administered by someone who told me it was her first job as a BA and she had only been doing it a few months. She said she wasn't confident in my abilities because she wasn't sure I could develop and configure Salesforce, which Salesforce isn't a tool BA's use. I was asked roughly 30 questions over the 6 interviews, and none of them tested my BA acumen. There was a lot of conversation about sales, client and stakeholder engagement, balancing priorities, but nothing from the BABOK guide or even a basic question about an artifact. Additionally, their tech stack is a MESS. Nothing is connected, their data is a mess, they are using the worst of the worst tools, and they have an insane amount of duplicate functionality. When this was mentioned to them, it was clear they were not willing to consolidate. I don't believe this would be a good company for a Senior BA who is looking to optimize and innovate, because the team was all sales people, and respectfully they didn't understand anything about any of the tools they are using. I also configured a demo instance in Jira to show how they could consolidate some applications, and none of the 6 interviewers even opened the presentation, documentation, or Jira instance to view the solution themselves. I went into the interview very excited about the company's ethos, but they are very much a sales team and a sales company. I also do not believe they know what a BA does or what the role entails, based on the interview, job description, tools they're using, and speaking to the one BA. Addiitonally, if you only have one BA, why would you hire one that has no experience without at least hiring a mentor or a lead? I did a thorough analysis of their tech stack and team and feel they are going to encounter some major issues trying to scale that could potentially put them out of business, because they don't understand any functions but sales, they have an insane amount of licensed products that aren't connected and providing analytics, and they aren't even using Salesforce correctly.
