I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Fast Enterprises (Springfield, IL) in Jan 2023
Interview
The application/interview process is straightforward and rather casual. The first interview is a 30-minute phone screen which was fairly laid back/conversational. The latter half of this interview was asking high-level technical questions. At some point during the interview, they will ask you how you feel about their relocation policy and where you're ideal location/regions are. Make sure to ask if there are any locations that are guaranteed to be hiring! I was able to choose my location from two locations that were guaranteed to be needing ICs! My second interview was about two hours and forty-five minutes. You are initially asked to take a 30-minute IQ test. Then I was interviewed by a project manager for the remainder of the time (who was promoted from within). The PM asked more in-depth behavioral and soft skill questions before plopping me into a Google doc to solve a puzzle, some SQL questions, and two coding questions. Again the interviewer was conversational which was pleasant. They are more concerned with your approach to the technical questions rather than your answers. They even have a guide for their technical interviews on youtube. Three days after my second interview I was extended an offer which I declined. In the end, being an IC wouldn't have aligned with my career goals as an SWE. Do your due diligence in researching this company. It might be a hot take but I believe even cs new grads are overqualified for this role. P.S. Don't message current employees on LinkedIn to ask about their experiences with this role, I apparently flagged security by doing this lmao.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
First interview: - What are the kinds of loops and what are their use cases? - Explain pass-by-reference and pass-by-value. - Describe inheritance to a 5-year-old. - Persuade a customer looking to host a dinner party to by dishes rather than buckets (really what is this question?). - What is your desired salary? - How do you feel about relocating? Second interview: - Describe a situation where you had difficulty with a team member. - Describe your approach to learning. - Describe the last thing you geeked out on (bonus points if it relates to configuration/problem-solving) - Why do you want to work at Fast? - Persuade me to move to your hometown (try to appeal to your interviewer, I talked about housing/school system because my interviewer had younger kids). - What's the result of this SQL inner join? - What's the result of this SQL outer join? - Solve the three mislabeled boxes puzzle. - Multiply without using the multiplication operation (with and without negative values). - Write a program that checks if a store is open (this question is essentially seeing how you would gather requirements from a client). This is a problem-solving role, your approach to the problems is judged more than your ability to obtain the correct answers!
It was a very quick process. I recieved a reply back within first two days of applying and scheduled a phone screening within a week from the email. Recuriter asked pretty average questions.
