      Product Manager Interview

      20 Aug 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Blink Health

      Interview

I applied through their job site and heard back three months later. I spoke with a recruiter first which went well and got me excited for the role. The recruiter seemed passionate and made the role sound cool. Then was given a take-home assignment. Pretty simple, just answer basic questions about a project you worked on. Make sure to include some metrics. Then got into the next round which was a call with a PM. This is where things fell apart. In short, the interviewer was woefully untrained in conducting an interview. The PM I spoke to had no structure to the call. After telling me about just how very many years experience he has, he simply asked what I was working on. Turns out he wanted a full project presentation so my brief explanation frustrated and confused him. He was unable to clarify what he wanted to discuss and then lectured me about how being a PM means being able to communicate a project clearly. That's pretty basic and so it came across as patronizing. I realized he wasn't trained in interviewing so I tried to manage up by asking for clarity on the structure but that didn't work. That's what triggered the lecture. The interview was clearly deteriorating and when I got to ask questions, I asked about who the manager was for the role (so I could ask about managerial style). He then made an inappropriate joke about A) how he doesn't know if he is the manager or not, how no one really does, and B) that maybe it would be a bad idea if he was my manager. This was deeply uncomfortable because it came across like he was chastising me. He kept calling me "man" and as a woman, this makes me wonder about whether there is an implicit gender discriminatory environment at Blink Health. He also said no one knows what role this person is filling specifically. He said he started three months ago and on day one they told him, "here's the bathroom, here's where the food is, now go into this meeting because you are gonna work on this thing." That's a horrible on-boarding process which, at that point, made me realize I definitely didn't want to work here. I then got a rejection email (no surprise there for how bad this call went). I responded gracefully with the above concerns. I never respond to rejection emails with feedback but this was such a bad experience I thought they'd want to know and address it. I never received a response though. Overall I am mostly bummed because the mission is awesome but I definitely wouldn't want to work on that Product team if that PM was in any way indicative of what it's like working there.

The Interview was complete. I got good feedback and assurance to be enrolled on the next steps. I never heard back from the interviewer or the company. So I am not sure what happened to the process or my application.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Blink Health (Austin, TX) in Apr 2021

      Interview

The process included a screening call with a recruiter, a call with the hiring manager, a live project with other team members, and interviews with data and engineering. The group interviews with the team were longer blocks, compared to the initial interviews. The live project was a classic PM problem to work through. I wanted to really highlight the technical recruitment process with Anthony -he went above and beyond sharing information about company culture, which as a remote hire was really important. Tracy, the hiring manager was amazing and answered all my questions in detail about the scope of work, expectations, and my first 90 days. It was an amazing candidate experience that many companies do not provide. I ultimately decided to go with a role more local to my location, but I highly recommend the process with Blink. They were amazing and have great PM opportunities for learning and growing in your career!

      Interview

Initial phone screen, a chat with a senior member to gauge where I could be fit in, then 5 interviewers in a day each lasting 45 mins to an hour. Every person I talked to was enthusiastic about working for Blink. New leadership is apparently great. The recruiting coordinator shared her story about how she started off as a customer service rep and worked her way into recruiting; her personal stories of how customers loved the product was genuine and added to the appeal of Blink. They got back to me within a week and after a few chats, I signed on. Super excited about this company: compensation is very competitive, the product enthusiasm is strong, and the people seem extremely competent.
