Interview
1. Call with Hiring Manager.
2. Onsite interview: Coding and System Design
Two interviewers came. They were nice and friendly but things went really bad.
They gave me a permanent eraser to write on the whiteboard. We ran out of space because we couldn't erase it. We didn't have space for the coding exercise. Luckily, I had my laptop so I did it there. I coded it and ran it. 5 minutes before the end of the interview, they ask me to solve this problem. I give them a perfect O(n) solution. Then they act like the solution is bad because I wasn't supposed to use the division operator :-/ I'm like... great... the position requires mind reading.
They leave, the next team is late and I'm waiting along in the room. No one was coming so I message the recruiter. Then, the same two people from before enter the room. One of them told me, "I'm not supposed to be here." This is supposed to be a system design interview but they say that the problem is "somebody is sending heavy queries to our Oracle database". I didn't really understand what this DBA question had to do with system designs, but I told them the tools that Oracle has to determine who is using or abusing the database and that they can use ANALYZE to EXPLAIN the queries.
But eventually they were more interested about the technologies used by my previous company (FAANG) than in my solution. I gave them what I thought they were interested in.
