      Kindle Marketing Team Interview

      13 Feb 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Jan 2014

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter for the role who said a senior staffer on the Marketing team was interested in my background posted on LinkedIn for a newly created offline marketing role. From there I had a phoned with the recruiter which lasted about 20 mins. Then it moved onto two more phoners, one with the hiring mgr and then a mktg team member. Both calls were very behavioral based (tell me about a time you...) with one of them being ridiculously so, meaning no give n take banter, very robotic. From there an HR coordinator took over the process. I was notified they wanted to fly me up to HQ for an in-person interview with the team. To their credit, the travel coordination was extremely smooth, professional, efficient & clear. They even accommodated a special request on my return flight which was very appreciated. Prior to coming up, the coordinator wanted to talk about salary, which of course I tried to defer. Then in an effort to temper my expectations, she shared that Amazon does typically offer lower salaries but they "make up for it in stock offerings and other benefits." They flew me up the day before wanting me to be settled and put me up for 2 nights in a fantastic hotel about 10 mins from the office. I was scheduled for 6 back-to-back interviews with various team members one-on-one. The interviews were all conducted in one conference room without a break and lasted about 5hrs total. Every team member came in with a laptop filled with prepared questions, all of which were behavioral. While I have no issue with asking pre-prepared question for consistency, some of the team members literally never looked up from typing and wouldn't deviate from the line when I tried to "humanize" the conversation. Everyone was nice but it felt like I was interviewing with a robot for 5 hrs. They are EXTREMELY focused on metric & analytics. Be prepared to quantify every single answer...I can't stress that enough! Before I exited, I met with the HR coordinator who wanted to hear my thought & gauge my interest. I shared that I wasn't sure if was a match for me due to corp culture which she understood. I interviewed on a Fri and she relayed I'd get feedback by the end of the following week, which I did, and that they weren't moving fwd. Submitting expenses (food, taxi, etc) was seamless and quick, with an online option to submit receipts.
