      Manager Vendor Support Interview

      15 Jun 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Jun 2019

      Interview

First a 30-45 min Phone Screen with a recruiter. The recruiter will ask some "tell me a time when" behavioral questions but a majority of the time is spent telling you what the role is. There is time at the end to ask questions but the recruiter doesn't necessarily know much detail. If moved to the next round you will have at least 1 interview with someone on the same functional team for about 45 minutes. These are all behavioral questions using the STAR method and revolve around the leadership principles. Once you pass this you may be invited to the HQ to do the loop of 5-7 in person interviews. Again, all behavioral questions around the leadership principles. They pay for travel to and from the HQ and are completely transparent during the process. You will be given every tip, interview guide, and piece of advice you need to succeed. My experience overall was very good. I had the phone screen with a very pleasant recruiter who had a great personality. Then I had a phone interview with a team member. This person was all business, straight to asking questions, and tough to read. Apparently I passed this stage and was offered the HQ loop. Unfortunately right before my loop the job was filled but the recruiter offered an interview for a similar role. I decided why not and had my loop scheduled. I did a lot of preparation as I had not interviewed for almost 8 years. Meeting with everyone was pleasant and they even provided lunch and an opportunity to speak at lunch with someone about the role. During the loop there is a "bar raiser" who is someone that is not part of the team who elevates the interview. Mine was simply the nicest and most pleasant person, I felt that one was my best of the day. A majority of the other interviewers seemed stiff and in most cases stuck to their questions and were glued to their laptops typing as you answered, a little strange and distracting in my opinion. After lunch I was put in a new interview room and waited until 15 minutes after my interview was supposed to begin to go to the front desk and inquire where she was. She arrived 20 minutes late to the interview which ate into my last interviewer of the day. The late interviewer seemed disheveled, unprepared, and spoke rapidly about herself in Amazon jargon. Despite that it was a positive experience. I was told within 3 days that I was not selected, which many companies don't even bother doing. They do not provide feedback so I can only speculate I wasn't as concise enough with my answers or there was another candidate they liked more. After reflecting on the experience I realized there were some red flags about the culture. The leadership principles for example were mentioned in 100% of the answers to questions I posited them. It's a little cult-like. I was hoping to see a little more personality of the folks I met with and except for the bar raiser there was little found at HQ. I would consider the company again in the future.
