For Chief Medical Officer Dr. Russell Adams, it's a profound reminder of his mother, Barb Adams, the young nurse pictured, who inspired his entire 43-year medical career, all spent affiliated with Allen Hospital. Barb Adams, along with her sister Jaclyne Ellis, contributed 65 years to Allen Hospital's 100-year history, shaping local health care. Dr. Adams credits his mother with instilling core values of accountability and respect. "Just because I’m a physician doesn’t mean I’m superior to someone else. I’m part of the team," he reflects, emphasizing the importance of learning from everyone and showing genuine care, especially when patients are vulnerable. This nostalgic image, featured on Allen's 100th-anniversary calendar, remains a powerful symbol of the enduring joy and human connection in health care, continually leaving an impression on Dr. Adams.
UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing Research and Innovation Program Manager represented UnityPoint Health at the Technology Association of Iowa’s Catalysts Series. She shared how the generate Lab at St. Luke’s has inspired innovation from our team members to solve problems and improve patient care. A partnership with Boston-based MakerHealth, generate is an open-access medical technology and learning lab. It provides hospital and clinic team members, patients and community partners with the cutting-edge tools and materials necessary to help them translate their ideas into functional prototypes.
