"The companies on this list understand that supporting working caregivers is a business imperative,” said Liz O’Donnell, Working Daughter founder. “While many companies have established initiatives to assist employees who are parents, it is equally critical to acknowledge and support those who are caring for ageing and/or ill family members.” More than 1 in 6 working Americans assist with the care of an elderly or disabled family member, relative, or friend. Seventy per cent of those caregivers suffer work-related difficulties due to their dual roles. The cost to businesses from caregivers leaving the workforce is an estimated $3.3 billion. In my 11 years at Elsevier, I have experienced directly how we learn to value women’s experiences and leadership and how Elsevier has embraced gender equity. When I returned to work after maternity leave in 2019, I found that a women’s network had started in my office. The first event was a celebration featuring our new CEO — the first woman CEO in the company’s 140-year history. Listening to her, my colleagues and other panelists speak about the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership, authenticity, and the power that comes from diversity and inclusion, I knew I was in a place where I could grow while also being true to my core beliefs.
