DFI Sustainability Series: Technological innovation in food waste recycling 🍻 How do we tackle food waste effectively? DFI has worked hard to reduce food waste by partnering with suppliers upstream and empowering our own team to implement food rescue measures. What’s more, we envision technological innovation in food waste recycling would help! DFI works closely with Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department to send damaged produce to O·PARK1 for treatment. O·PARK1 is Hong Kong’s first organic resources recovery centre that turns food waste into biogas, which is used for generating renewable energy, along with compost. We are excited to help spearhead such a worthwhile initiative. Maxim’s also partnered with Breer, an innovative start-up co-founded by HKUST students that utilises unused bread from the chain to make beer, promoting a circular economy. BOB comes in two flavours, with the Original BOB featuring a 5% alcohol pale ale infused with 25 grams of dairy-free surplus bread, while the Coffee BOB, launched in May, combines the same base with 15 grams of surplus bread and an extra kick of 4 grams of coffee grounds, all supplied by Maxim's. Not only does Breer repurpose surplus bread, but the vision and determination to make good use of technology to reduce food waste has struck a chord with us. DFI Sustainability Series: Minimising Social Inequality ⚖️ How does DFI address social inequality as a retailer committed to social and environmental impact? By fostering collaborative initiatives! We provided educational opportunities and support for marginalised children through partnerships with local NGOs, such as Khmer NGO for Education (KHEN) in Cambodia and the Guangzhou Yang Ai Special Children Parent Club in China. KHEN is a local NGO and certified Child Safe Organisation, aimed to promote child rights, accessible, inclusive & quality education and the protection of vulnerable children. The Guangzhou Yang Ai Special Children Parent Club helps build a support platform for families in need, providing consultations, lectures and training. As of 2022, we have sponsored more than 160 students living in rural areas and donated US$20,000 to support children’s healthcare in Cambodia. Fundraising efforts, such as those carried out by Lucky Supermarket and Guardian, enabled the purchase of essential resources to allow children to gain access to knowledge and learning. Through setting up donation boxes in stores, 7-Eleven China has been supporting the Guangzhou Yang Ai Special Children Parent Club Since 2004. These examples are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the various strategies we have committed to for reducing inequality.
DFI Mental Wellness Month Each year, 10 October marks World Mental Health Day to raise awareness of mental health challenges. At DFI Retail Group, we dedicate the entire October to mental wellness to drive actions to support and promote mental health and its intricate link with our wellbeing. In Hong Kong, DFI hosted our first large scale Wellbeing Expo for team members with a wide variety of activities targeted to raise wellbeing awareness, such as receiving professional health check consultation and vision screenings from #ManningsHK Professional Service team, sampling healthy treats and supplements, attending scent workshop (and so much more!). Through engaging in a variety of activities, we hope our team members can explore different aspects of mental wellbeing, understand how to cope with stress better and build stronger mental resilience, leading to a healthier and more positive life. Throughout the rest of the month, a series of virtual revitalising programmes will also take place across different markets so that everyone can join remotely in support of mental wellness within DFI and across the Group. The Wellbeing Expo was a great success thanks to teams from #ManningsHK #GNCHK #WellcomeHK #Meadows #7ElevenHK for their support and sponsoring of the welcome souvenirs 💓. Special shout out to the DFI HR Wellbeing team for their effort in putting together this meaningful event! 🫶🏼 Stay tuned to learn more about our wellbeing initiatives!

7-Eleven Celebrates “Sik Tak Fan La” 1st Anniversary On our journey to serving our community and adhering to our CSR vision, 7-Eleven launched the “Sik Tak Fan La” Charity Programme last year in collaboration with Pei Ho Counterparts to provide food and assistance to those in need. To mark the 1st anniversary, we organised a Mid-Autumn volunteering week with volunteers from DFI Retail Group and across Jardine Matheson. We also extended our volunteering efforts to the Shau Kei Wan community for the first time, delivering kindness and warmth to more underserved people. We prepared and distributed goodie bags and gave away shopping trolleys to Pei Ho Counterparts volunteers and their beneficiaries, especially the seniors, making their lives easier when carrying heavy or bulky items. A big shout-out to all our volunteers! We also want to thank those who have supported our programme by buying a 7-SELECT meal box. Together, we can make a difference 💓!

DFI Sustainability Series: How can we harvest solar energy from our stores? On the rooftop! In Taiwan, we have made enormous headway in expanding the use of solar energy. The 740kWp solar panel on the rooftop of the Kaohsiung IKEA store was completed last year. The system has the capacity to generate approximately 900,000kWh of electricity 💡 annually, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 220 households for a year in Taiwan. Today, IKEA Taiwan has installed solar power generation systems in six locations, including five stores and the recent Fulfilment Centre. The total output of solar panels installed has reached 8,101 kWp. They are capable of reducing about 4,600 tonnes of carbon emission per annum, equivalent to the CO2 of 209,000 mature trees taking up a year! Curious to find out more?
