Where do we go from here?

Pros

WebAssign helps educators by allowing them to teach instead of wasting time grading homework. Serving educators is the reason most of us are here. Even though our future doesn't look very hopeful, morale is holding steady. While the desertion rate has risen, it is still limited to those who can find other jobs.

Cons

The company is going through a rough period. We have lost our primary breadwinner and our revenue will be significantly curtailed over the coming years as they replace us. This information has escaped into the general population and it has made hiring very problematic. We have 20 open positions mostly in sales and software development. Most of the executives don't have a background in education or innovation.

Pros

Great location. Open office space. Nice cafe. Reasonable work hours. Matching 401K.

Cons

Our founder was a visionary and he created a product that was ahead of its time. He was a professor and he understood the problems that teachers face every day. Under his leadership, WebAssign prospered and grew. Since his departure several years ago, the new CEO has stifled innovation, disappointed our customers, angered our partners and generally made a mess of things. The CEO and most of the executives don't understand educators and therefore they have no vision. The results of their ineptitude is 3+ years of going in circles with no progress. Employees are leaving in record numbers. We have over 15 openings at the moment. Our largest publisher which generates most of our revenue is weary of our incompetence and they have decided to use a different product in 2016.

WebAssign Response
10y
Thank you for posting your company review. You are clearly very passionate about WebAssign and the education industry. I would like to provide some counter points to your statements. Our founder, John Risley, was definitely a visionary and a passionate educator. He saw a need in the market and created a product to address that need. He also readily admitted that he did not have the business experience to progress the company from a small mom-and-pop to a legitimate company able to support, scale, and carry forward his vision in an evolving market. In 2012, he selected Alex Bloom, our current president, to lead the company because of his prior business experience and leadership ability. With the exception of the CTO and CAO positions, our executive team is the same executive team that John chose to lead and manage the company. WebAssign continues to grow, and has been nominated and received an award two years in a row for the Triangle Business Journal's Fast 50, which recognizes the top 50 fastest growing companies in the Triangle. More significantly, the positive feedback from our faculty and content partners on recent product enhancements reinforces our strategic plan. Our challenge as we move forward is to build on the success that we have experienced with the WebAssign product and create complementary products in the education market. This is an exciting time for WebAssign, and I embrace that challenge and look forward to our future. We have an open-door policy at WebAssign, and all of the executives and leadership team would welcome the chance to talk with you about your ideas for future growth and product leadership. Not all managers are awful

Pros

We support local charities. Our office space is open with plenty of light. 401K matching.

Cons

Most managers are trying to do the right thing. Many managers lack experience and they are not prepared to deal with certain issues. The executives are disconnected and they don't understand educators. The CEO is a fish out of water.
