Challenging and Rewarding

Pros

This is a creative agency, and that comes with all the normal ebbs and flows of the creative world, challenging clients, awesome opportunities, and hard work, but the heart of the company aims to be a step above the rest, shooting to give each employee the opportunity to do their best work here. The company is small so each person has the opportunity to learn a lot and make a difference, even outside of the normal scope of their job- if they want to. The company aims to provide a workflow that fosters creativity and curbs burnout whenever possible, which says a lot since it is widely known the creative industry can churn and burn like no other. The benefits package is robust, exceeds industry standards, and is constantly being improved to stay competitive. I feel like my value at the company is respected as me being a whole person, and the staff and company care about me beyond my employment.

Cons

Having the opportunity to wear many hats can bring a lot of growth opportunities to the right person, but can bring uncertainty and confusion to those who thrive in a world with clean systems and a consistent day to day. One can have the opportunity to spend their morning branding a beverage company, and their afternoon digging through copywrite laws and trademark availability. That type of work can really envigorate some, and others can cause exhaustion, knowing which one you are when you start can help set you up for long term success. Some young employees don't know that much about themselves yet and it can be a challenge when you are first begining.

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Pros

Amazing colleagues Great and positive atmosphere when management isn't around Fun team activities Fun clients and projects

Cons

You constantly feel like you're walking on eggshells around management, the vibe of the studio is solely based off of the mood of the "fearless leader" - and 9 times out of 10, the mood is horrible. Every other day someone is crying due to public humiliation, high stress, the fear of the public humiliation you know you are about to get from management, or because of tasteless and heartless comments made by management about creative work. The quarterly profit share that you are promised when you are hired is likely not to come your way. No room for growth. Turnover here is frightful - during my time at The Engine, I have witnessed MANY employees get fired and MANY unhappy employees leave due to management. No one employee gets treated equally.
