The Midas Touch in Reverse

Pros

You will get a great comparison that will really make you respect the new company you will inevitably work for.

Cons

You have to work for this company to get the comparison. Sysco is a company that only grows when they buy successful companies. If they were required to only grow organically to satisfy their stockholders, they would be a penny stock. Sysco will play games with your salary. After 20 years, and after they acquired us, they gave me a job title that wasn't anything close to what I was doing. They claim some HR unintentional thing. Come next review time, they told me I was at the top of my pay band for my job title, which was a job title that paid much, much less than what my previous job title was. So the job title change was intentional, all while requiring me to do the same things of the previous job title. When interest was expressed to move up higher in the chain, I was told that I 'should get to know the higher-ups better so they knew who I was.' Basically, I needed to know how to play politics in this SNL like farce. They will also flat out lie to you about their intents and purposes: 'You kick our butt in this region when it comes to selling produce, we have no intention of changing how you sell!' That's a direct quote from their top sales guy during one of the company meetings at acquisition. They went on the completely change how we sell things. They will ignore advice from people who knew how things worked in the company they acquired, and get rid of everybody that made the company attractive for them to buy in the first place. The end result was systems broke down almost immediately when the people who knew how they worked left. Despite being warned several times they should send people in to learn the network. They had a data breach because of an internal screw up that left a default password on a off the shelf reporting system that they had a lot of vendor and company information connected to. Speaking of cybersecurity, they hound all their locations to make sure they stay patched. However, in their corporate location, where all the data and information actually reside, they had (possibly still have) Windows XP and Windows 2000 machines active. Mind you, there's no antivirus security on these machines. When I asked about it, I was told 'this is more of a do as I say not as I do type scenario'. If you like shady companies that lie to you, play games with your salary, tell you that their surveys are completely anonymous (they aren't), this is the company for you.

Pros

Loved my customers and the autonomy of having my own route with little micromanagement from my direct supervisor.

Cons

People in departments much higher level coming up with initiatives that do not put the customer first. It's all about the stock prices.

Pros

Good brand recognition and strong market presence Decent Asociacion Solidarista, I guess the best in Costa Rica, benefits package is ok not outstanding Stable job environment

Cons

No Opportunities to work with cross-functional teams No career advancement opportunities at all for Costa Rica – internal mobility is almost nonexistent for Costa Rican people working for the HR field, and promotions are provided to US colleagues as Manager convenience and not because they deserve it Lack of mentorship or structured development plans Management often overlooks internal talent in favor of external hires Feedback culture is weak – little to no career conversations or growth-focused evaluations Work can become repetitive with no clear path for progression Managers of the area have their preferred co-workers and therefore, they force you mandatory to do their jobs, even if is not under your task.

Pros

The work itself is manageable and has potential. Some teammates were supportive and genuinely tried to help each other despite the lack of structure

Cons

The biggest issues come from management, not the job. Training is extremely limited, yet new hires are expected to perform at full capacity right away. At one point, two brand-new employees were given the workload of four, with almost no guidance or support. Expectations were unrealistic and set people up for stress and burnout. The management style in the LAC Streets JMMs department is the main reason employees struggle. The supervisor in charge often communicated in a dismissive and unprofessional way, creating a tense and discouraging atmosphere. More than four people left our department directly because of this supervisor’s behavior—not because of the work itself. The lack of respect, empathy, and leadership makes it difficult to feel valued or motivated.

Pros

The people, by far... I had the pleasure, over the course of nearly two decades, of working alongside some of the most kind, compassionate, and intelligent people. I was fortunate to have many great leaders and colleagues who I learned so much from throughout my Sysco career.

Cons

Frequent company-wide reductions in headcounts in recent years. This has led to lots of anxieties and a significant decline in morale throughout the company. Teams that carry heavy loads continue to be stretched thin due to cuts and continuous introduction of new initiatives. The treatment and navigation post-layoff is very unfortunate and disheartening. Where I thought might consider applying for another role within the company, the treatment post-layoff has severed any such consideration. Colleagues are "encouraged" to explore opportunities within the company but few opportunities for growth will exist along their desired path, leaving many feeling "stuck." The shift in the company's culture over the past five to six years... We used to "bleed Sysco blue," but that has taken a sharp downturn due to the non-appreciation for the deep knowledge, expertise, and legacy held by loyal colleagues. Although, nothing is ever "owed," one can't help but recognize such a massive blow to the company's integrity over time. The underappreciation for, and mishandling of colleagues who have a wide breadth of capabilities. There was a time when rising tides raised all ships, but that has sadly turned into "what's best for me, at the expense of any and everyone below me." After so many years, I sincerely wish I didn't feel this way but I feel compelled to be as honest as I can about my experience. There was a time when Sysco felt like home, and the place I wanted to hang my hat when it was time to close the book on my career. Somewhere in recent years, the culture continued to shift away from something I felt as proud to be a part of as I once was. I can't speak for all but I know this is the sentiment of many...
