Pros

There are some fantastic, brilliant engineers at this company. I've made some great work friends and learned some valuable skills from people here.

Cons

If you take a job at Structured you can expect the following: -You will be underpaid. -You will be overworked. -There are no cost of living raises, or any raises for that matter. -Advancement opportunities are behind moving goalposts. -You will have multiple managers that do not communicate well with each other. If something they tell you to do ends up causing a problem, they will let the bus run over you unless you have properly CYA. Did I mention you'll be underpaid? You can expect to make 15-25% below the average for your job title/description. The benefits do not make up for this.

First, thank you for taking time to provide your views about working at Structured – both what you see as good and what should be improved. It shows me that you care enough about your job and about this company to want to make it better. I completely agree with the Pros you listed. We DO have amazing engineers at this company, and I am always gratified to see the great working relationships so many people have fostered here. Naturally, the Cons are always harder to see, but they are no less valuable. Please know that I never want Structured’s employees to feel underpaid, overworked, and without a way to advance. In our nearly 30-year history, we’ve earned a fantastic track record of promoting people from within and – equally impressive in my view – most Structured employees have worked at the company for at least 5 years. For many, that span is greater than a decade. This kind of longevity is very rare in IT and indicates to me that we do a lot of things right. Of course, as a small private business, there are definitely transitional times when the workload is heavier, pay raises are not as liberal as everyone would like, and communication is not as “closed-loop” as it should be. But, we work it out and pull through together – better for it on the other side. If you still have concerns, please know my door is open to you… and to everyone else at Structured. We have remained in business for 3 decades because we know how to adapt and grow as a solution provider. That mindset also applies to our internal processes and structure. We’re never done improving. Pros

The level of projects to get involved in, the opportunities in continued education, and the ability to work on projects out of other offices

Cons

The company has no direction, the benefits are the worst that I have ever seen, the upper management tends to like certain Engineers who become the favorites at the time for projects. Volunteering for training and projects tends to not get noticed unless you are in the inner circle. Feedback from management is poor to non-existent. There is no goal setting for individuals, or opportunities that will allow for growth. The Portland office tends to believe that the best of the best exist in that office, however most of the staff are friends of the family or just entered the IT business. Also stop focusing on having so many vendors, focus on ten per practice - this works for many VAR's.
