Good for my career but not my mental health

Pros

Still just about small enough that you can know everyone by name. Very friendly and helpful colleagues overall; new starters receive a warm welcome. Rewarding to feel like you're making a positive difference. Fast pace keeps it interesting, if you like that. Gave me lots of good experience.

Cons

How good your experience is very much depends on your team/manager. There are increasing and widespread issues with workload, stress and morale, and individuals are blamed explicitly or implicitly for not self managing. Toxic behaviours are enabled. Pay is low for the level of responsibility and workload, and scales are not transparent. Support for staff moving roles/being promoted is lacking.

Pros

There are some really lovely people to work with. Able to schedule medical appointments during work hours. Staff lunch every month - free food and a longer lunch break. Good first office job if you’re willing to get paid minimal legal wage.

Cons

The work culture is extremely toxic. There is no communication between departments. The management lacks any qualifications, training or people skills and are openly treating employees differently based on personal preferences. Unfortunately, the management also lacks disability and mental health awareness and ableist comments are often made. There is no reward or recognition available for anyone working below Project Coordinator level so the only reward for doing your job well is a larger workload. The pay is very poor and below average. No benefits. Flexible working is only available at certain positions and is actively discouraged. No progress opportunities as internal promotions are rare. I would not recommend working at Stem Learning to anyone. There are better companies out there.

Enjoyed my time, but glaring issues

Pros

Great people to work with, interesting and impactful work.

Cons

Senior managers have no care for staff wellbeing despite reported issues and a significant increase in staff turnover in the last 12 months. The overall strategy of the organisation is not communicated to staff. There is a culture of staff not being trusted and management decisions are made based on 'highest paid person's opinion' rather than evidence and accurate information. Senior management have no leadership qualities and the CEO posts some questionable content on her social media channels.
