Pros

The company has made remarkable strides in handling employee concerns. Recently, I reported an issue, and the Human Resources team, now known as the People Team, conducted a thorough and professional investigation. This marks a significant change from the past when I didn't feel comfortable reporting anything due to fears of being ignored. The new approach has created a more supportive and responsive environment, making me feel valued and heard.

Cons

Despite these improvements, there's still a need for better training for managers. There's a noticeable lack of professionalism among some shift managers, particularly on the NSAH and SHL hotlines. This often leads to miscommunication and unresolved issues, which can be frustrating.

Pros

The people doing the actual work on the ground at RAINN are some of the most amazing, dedicated, and hard-working people I've ever had the honor of working with. The way they are willing to go above and beyond for survivors is a true testament to the good in the world.

Cons

The leadership at this organization is straight out harmful. RAINN's mission is "to carry out programs to prevent sexual violence, help victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice," but that mission seems to end at the front doors of the organization. There are many survivors, myself included, who choose to work at RAINN because they want to create a positive outcome from their trauma. Instead they find themselves constantly dismissed and devalued. During the fallout of the 2022 Business Insider article - "Insiders say RAINN, the nation's foremost organization for victims of sexual assault, is in crisis over allegations of racism and sexism" - as employees tried to deal with either having been personally victimized by leadership or with learning that their coworkers had been going through this hardship, the message from leadership was that if we needed to take a step back, we'd be the ones failing survivors - ignoring the fact that so many of us also fell into that category. I think the services that RAINN offers are vital, but I don't believe that the price for them can be the mental health and the dignity of the people doing the actual work.

Pros

Remote work, lovely coworkers, many people are passionate about the mission

Cons

No work-life balance, will push you past your breaking point, highest raises NEVER even match inflation, toxic managers and "People Team" is truly just a front for legal.

Pros

I liked the work I was doing.

Cons

I worked at RAINN for 4 years and they "forgot" I worked there and never gave me an evaluation, and then when I mentioned evals are how people get increases in pay, they said I was not eligible for a pay increase, despite their error for 4 years. I even asked about an evaluation. They also sent me a congrats on working here for 90 days after I worked there for over 3 years.

Room for growth

Pros

There's room for growth should you want it and also take feedback well. Feedback orientated space. Been here for 4 years. 95.9% Employees are very nice and good people who mean well. Really great to have co-workers you trust and are dependable and reliable- also funny (sense of humor is important especially in this line of work). I have worked a multiple non-profits. For a non-profit, it's actually one of the better ones I've worked at.

Cons

There needs to some form of evaluation for senior leadership to hold them accountable and also to make sure that feedback is being relayed to them and documented. It can be hard when someone says, "Oh I didn't know that- no one ever said anything to me" or "That never happened".

Pros

Working for an important mission and survivors. Colleagues are mostly dedicated and lovely people.

Cons

Not a good response from leadership since the Business Insider article. Slow to do anything to make change and a lot of shifting the blame and not focusing on accountability. Underpaid despite being expected to work over 40 hours a week, but maybe that's all non profits.

Pros

My team members and other mid-level staff and hotline staff are some of the most caring, thoughtful, and professional people I have met. Everyone cares deeply about the mission and is an expert in their work.

Cons

Unfortunately, upper management is not in a good place. In the last six weeks, six of the 7 members of senior leadership have resigned due to the president of the organization being difficult to work with and having poor leadership and intuition.

Pros

RAINN’s mission attracts some truly phenomenal employees. Undoubtedly, I met some of my greatest friends and colleagues here. The work is fulfilling and important.

Cons

RAINN’s work culture is astonishingly toxic. I personally experienced and witnessed so much racism, sexism, ableism… not to mention, my colleagues and I were paid practically nothing. People were punished for taking any time off. At the end of the day, it’s a top-down problem. The CEO Scott Berkowitz does not care about the mission, he only cares about profiting off of survivors’ pain. He uses abuse and manipulation tactics with employees throughout the organization. I can’t advise you enough to not work here for the sake of your own mental health.
