Pros

Overall company seems very friendly and supportive. You will meet a lot of genuinely lovely interesting people. Most the people pull their weight which makes the work more manageable. The new labs are better than the old ones and are nicer to work in but not without issues. The work is interesting to start with and you definitely get involved quickly. Over time there seems to be some possibility to get involved in some different techniques. There is “responsibility” to take on early on which is ok if you want to do extra work. The graduate experience varies quite a lot across the departments but it sounds like there are some good aspects for each department. Management are varying levels of helpful, but there are ones that care.

Cons

Walk through the labs and you’ll hear the same people who spend all day talking, complaining that their workload is too high, some managers crying and moaning about having to do their job thinking no one can hear them and actually productive people running about covering for people chatting. If you are someone who likes to work, there is plenty for you to do here to cover for people who are fake busy. For those that are actually busy, the pay is not reflective of the amount of work they do. The work becomes samey and all you are asked to do is more of the same but quicker by the managers who just want to look good to their manager. There are some managers who just outright ignore some people and only talk to their favourites. The company is trying to be big in some ways but one of those ways is not employee benefits which are basically non-existent.

Pros

The scientific work undertaken here is stimulating and fulfilling, and I enjoy my job. In my role, I interact with other employees in all departments and I find everyone to be helpful, efficient and fun. We work set hours (8 h per day with 1 h for lunch) and I never have to take work home with me, so work-life balance is good.

Cons

If you are used to WFH or hybrid working, then the set hours of working on site might take some getting used to.

Pros

When you leave, you’ve learnt work politics, how to deal with snide people, and how to hold your ground against workplace bullying.

Cons

If you want some good advice, then listen to every review on here giving this “workplace” 1 star. I am not even surprised to find that the toxic culture of this place hasn’t changed. For employers, I would even be wary of any “manager” who lasted here more than 3/4 years, as only those with a toxic nature can thrive. The people I worked with were rude and arrogant, ignoring you whilst you stood next to them asking a question. These were basically kids who found themselves in positions higher than their experience. Pack mentality. You were given tasks to follow and you do the same thing every single day. You’re basically like a factory worker in a production line, producing and analysing biological materials. If youre overburdened and make an error, the senior management will arrive and make out your mistake is end of the world. It’s absolutely horrendous how they get involved and make you feel small. The job itself was soul destroying. You work 9 hours, with the bare legal minimum allowed for breaks: 30 mins lunch (to the clock) and 2x 10min breaks (to the clock). If you stay on lunch longer than 30 mins by a couple of mins, they start looking for you. You’re working with stinky materials all day, and you go home smelling funky. Glorified sweatshop. They’ll even hire cleaners without qualifications and make them do jobs that graduates are doing for much less money. The damage control reviews are hilarious. Preying on newbies to write nice reviews, how low can you get?
