Pros

Researchers can conduct researches into various development issues independently without any influence from funders. Free to exchange different views with colleagues. Flexible working hours.

Cons

There was no management or organisational discipline at all when it comes to cross-institute project. Every research group works on their own without coordination from the senior management. The quality of some research outputs was questionable.

Pros

You won't struggle to find kind and inspiring people to work with. Whatever your speciality in international development, the subject matters are always interested. This institution has amazing security protocol for researchers. They take care of you. Fantastic office and location.

Cons

Top management are the most two-faced, catty individuals you will ever have the displeasure of working with. They're all talking badly of each other, all trying to take the other down to get the top position. They live in this primarily white, elite, Oxbridge-bubble and if you're not part of that circle and work in an administrative capacity like I did, they will make you feel like a worm. There will be little to no training, no assistance for development, and no consideration for work-life balance. Don't bother confiding in a single one of them, not even if it concerns your own health. Everything you share will be used against you. The lack of respect astounded me. This is supposed to be a humanitarian organisation, they're supposed to have seen the worst and best of humanity. Shouldn't that make you a kinder, more humble person? Management seemed more concerned with their own image as humanitarian superstars.
