Strain on employees is reaching a tipping point

Pros

Good benefits, really satisfied with dental. Facilities/HR are supportive of ergonomics if you are able to provide proof of issues. Would be even better if ergonomics were proactive but do appreciate this still. Yoga twice a month available. Summer Fridays (half days Friday) are great, but were halved this year, so I expect these will soon be a thing of the past. Week of Christmas similarly great perk that we get off, but I expect with the way things are going this will also be phased out soon. There are good people who work here.

Cons

Strain on employees is massive. There’s constantly no budget for support employees or investment in current employees - no raises or feeling that by giving your all you are actually going to be recognized. Promotions come from people leaving, not due to merit. My mental health has suffered significantly in the past year of working here because I care deeply about doing a good job and fulfilling expectations but they are asking too much of individuals. Two jobs are constantly collapsing in to one all over the place, people leave and aren’t replaced and those who remain are expected to pick up the slack without dropping any existing duties. There are constantly subtle messages that encourage working more hours than the standard work week (e.g. “we really appreciate you all powering through to make NELSON great”, “we know you’ve all had to give your all over the last year for this progress” etc.) I appreciate that the company has vision and is trying to change a difficult industry and do admire the passion some of the higher management has, but there seems to be no plan for this gruelling pace to end and expectation that we will give hours and hours at the end of our days, being constantly checking our emails and not having good work life balance. Just seems like the attitude is that this is the new reality and if we don’t like it we aren’t “visionary” or “bold” enough to be a part of “new NELSON”. Just feels like there is an implication we aren’t strong or passionate enough if we don’t just “power through”.
