Used to be great, Leadership is Toxic

Pros

Great pay once you rise above entry level, snacks, day-to-day teams are a close-knit trauma-bonded family, great original product (not the acquired one)

Cons

Especially sales leadership truly enables and protects toxic bro frat hustle culture mentality. Over-drinking at company AND CLIENT events, unprofessional employee behavior in-front of and with clients and when incidents are reported to HR, the reporters are pushed out (sometimes immediately). Most female employees fear retaliation for speaking up. But leadership sweeps it under the rug and protects problematic people that drink too much and cross a line (multiple times) if you close big deals. Sales team was not a friendly environment to females. Ultimately reached a point where I was so demotivated not seeing any action taken against very problematic employees (yes multiple) that I no longer cared about my role or the company’s success despite loving my day-to-day team and the original core product.

Pros

Like everywhere you will meet some genuine people (some not so much). Solid benefits. Solid work experience. Remote! Snacks in office. A place to give you a roof over your head and allow you to pay your bills.

Cons

Below Senior Manager level, pay is low with minimal raises. The culture is cliquey, favoring white or white-passing individuals and conventionally attractive people. Long-time employees act entitled and mistreat others without consequences. Incompetent upper management stifles growth, prioritizing travel and pay bumps for themselves over investing in the team. Only the sales team is truly valued, and career progression is uncertain. Despite management's claims, the culture isn't as inclusive as they suggest, especially for people of color. The focus is on appearances and keeping up a facade rather than producing quality products and nurturing talent.

Pros

- Competitive salary & benefits. In my years at MI I received multiple promotions, raises and a bonus! - If you are a high performer you will have many opportunities to stretch outside your comfort zone, learn new things, work with exciting customers, etc. - If you can last more than 2 years at Movable Ink you can pretty much handle anything once you leave. Between constant org changes, flip flopping product direction and failures, unclear priorities or goals, literally nothing scares me anymore because this company puts its people through A LOT. It wasn't until after I left and spent some time at another company that I realized this how much I experienced in my tenure there. - Plenty of really interesting technical challenges with cutting edge tech - Lots of fun activities for both remote and in person teams that help you meet your teammates and learn about different cultures, art, history, career development, etc. - If you're in a customer service role or sales (most of the company) there is an annual review and promotion cycle. It's hard to not get promoted if you just put in the time. - Swanky well-designed offices in great metropolitan areas with all the flashy perks you could think of - The people are great - Movable Ink has a really thorough hiring process that attracts smart, talented people that care about one another. - Very progressive culture that encourages people to be themselves and welcome others to the team. There are so many employee resource groups to join for support and getting to know one another. The recruiting team really values hiring for culture adds versus culture fits. I've never worked with a more interesting and thoughtful group of people. - Knows how to throw an Inkredible event!

Cons

I write these cons with love and respect for the many amazing Inkers I worked with over the years, but it's because of my concerns for the well-being of those people that I'm addressing some low points from my experience. I hope this raises awareness and leads to more positive outcomes in the future. If these issues were addressed Movable Ink would hands down be the absolute best place to work. - Talks a big game about mental health and subsidizes access to mobile apps for counseling but then doesn't staff teams appropriately or support it's employees where it matters. Burn out is hard to avoid especially if you work on the product team. - Lots of abusive and problematic behavior from founders that goes unchecked even though everyone knows and talks about it. Anytime someone criticizes the CEO they mysteriously part ways shortly after. When interviewing, ask questions like "how many people were in this role before me" or "what happened to the previous person in this role" to see if your department is affected by this behavioral pattern. - So. much. turnover in product. Any leadership role on the product team within the past 6 years has been a revolving door. Anyone in a role like this has a year to prove their value but with a history of under investment in EPD you're doomed no matter how talented you are or how good you can manage problematic executives. - Everything is a facade - this speaks to the immense power of the marketing and brand teams and the huge presence on social they generate, but everything from product announcements to how they posture themselves in the market is mostly smoke and mirrors. Notice how product announcements don't actually show you the product? (Hint: it probably doesn't exist "yet"). - If you're looking to work at a product-driven company, you should know that Movable Ink is more of a customer service-driven digital marketing agency with an inaccessible and difficult to use platform that requires an army of client experience personnel to maintain usage and engagement. - Performative approach to addressing DEI meanwhile the leadership team (and anyone with power/influence) are mostly white men. - Aggressive replies to Glassdoor reviews that aren't 100% positive.
