Management Problem

Pros

Great Salary and Benefits. Promote Safety heavily. Good people in the Port Arthur area that make good colleagues. Generally, managers are very understanding of family/personal needs and can be flexible as needed.

Cons

Senior management is very inconsistent, and hierarchical. Certain individuals at that level are irrational, controlling, and "lead" by threatening, humiliating, and belittling subordinates. This leads to a toxic work place where the only method of survival is to keep all thoughts to yourself and do only what specifically told to do. Discussion, creative thought, and working together is a thing of the past. Micro-managing is the predominant management style that is driven and encouraged by senior management. As a result, the Entire site is demoralized and general mood is somber across all departments and organizations.

Pros

Good compensation, work-life balance, and good culture across all of Motiva.

Cons

Limited advancement opportunity. There is visible bias and favoritism for career advancement opportunities. People without a relevant skillset/experience get promoted or place into roles just because they are good with the hiring manager or executive team. The executive team is not the strongest. Too many org changes. Aramco dictates Motiva's long-term strategy.

Toxic Environment

Pros

Decent benefits and compensation in comparison to other companies in the industry.

Cons

Toxic environment. Employees are not appreciated by higher level managers. HR doesn't care and will always take the side of the manager, even when the employee has spoken up about manager behavior multiple times.

Pros

Great pay and benefits; good Management hierarchy; ability to work from home when necessary; 9/80 schedules offered; frequent salary increases and opportunity for growth

Cons

Lots of corporate politics; success or failure dependant upon your manager rather than yourself and could be based on their own ambition; people placed in positions of authority with no leadership skills; promotions based on who you know rather than your work

disappointing

Pros

Pay and benefits are good.

Cons

This refinery has went straight down hill and people are leaving or looking to leave as soon as possible. Turnover rate says it all. Many people are unhappy. 1 manager controls everything through fear and intimidation. This manager has a history with Shell of carring out the same type of actions but is overlooked because profitability is great! Nothing will change here.

Pros

The refinery itself is incredible (huge, many processes to choose from, tons to learn). 9/80s is a huge plus. Benefits are decent. Corporate is great. Everyone I met at corporate was supportive, happy, and cared a lot. Work life balance isn’t terrible, but depends on what units you’re assigned to.

Cons

Pay is lower than competition. Harassment at the refinery is rampant. Harassment is constant, often sexual and includes managers/supervisors. Other forms of harassment include spear campaigns, gossip, aggressive yelling, etc. Management is either involved or will not support you and will gaslight you if you bring it up as a concern so they can avoid responsibility/confrontation. Witnessed many safety concerns including managers overriding stop work authority, almost causing massive explosions, biased investigations, and pressuring their employees to hide recordable injuries. HR there to protect the company and management, not help you but that’s honestly normal for any company.

The odd hours if you work a non-traditional shift. You might also have to work holidays.
