An old-fashioned old-boys' club

Pros

The pay is good, and certain teams are very functional with good people and good managers.

Cons

Microgaming is a great place to work if you're male, South African or related to the CEO. None of the top management is female; the company hides their massive diversity problem behind numbers like "50% female"... when most of the women work as admins or in HR. Ask anyone there about the "old boys cycling club", and they'll know who you mean, what you mean, and that you won't get anywhere near a management position if you don't fit into that, or if you get on the wrong side of anyone in it (possibly by just doing a better job at something than one of them). Ego, nepotism and cronyism are rife.

We welcome open feedback from our people past and present, so thank you for sharing your thoughts. Diversity and equality are undoubtedly important to our business, and of course there is always room for improvement. We have made strides in this area over recent years, with 40% of senior leadership roles now occupied by females – that’s across HR, marketing, finance and compliance. Further into the business, 36% of managers are female, and we employ people from all backgrounds, with 20 nationalities making up our total workforce. But we can do better. Your points on career mobility have been noted and discussed among senior leadership. It’s my job as HR leader to ensure that our business is seen to reward high performance and people who live our values, which is precisely what our leadership aims to embed throughout the organisation. My door remains open to any member of staff who wishes to discuss these matters confidentially.

Pros

The building is nice & modern

Cons

If you aren't in the boys club, you're out. It seems as though they just like people who are just out of school and that they can indoctrinate, anyone with a lot of experience from other gaming companies is bled of their ideas & info & then switched around into some other lower position or made redundant. After a few months the redundancy role suddenly becomes available again & they move someone over from the South Africa office to fill the role, knowing the South African is tied to the company for several years due to the visa. The upper level management is very arrogant & have no interaction with anyone except a select few good ole boys. Great majority don't have any experience outside microgaming & if you don't have experience, you need education & they have neither. They will continue bringing in young kids they can make think exactly like them and other south africans tied to them through visas.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We welcome and appreciate all feedback, not least when it highlights areas for improvement. There’s a lot to digest here. I must be clear about one point in particular – in the relatively rare instance of positions being made redundant at Microgaming, we’ve never sought to reopen or refill them after a few months, as asserted. You mention our South African colleagues several times – one of 18 nationalities to make up our diverse 200-strong workforce. We hire talent from all over the world based on their ability, potential and diversity of thought and experience, and we always look to local talent pools before widening our search. I have shared your views RE ‘1950s boys club’ and ‘arrogant management’ with our senior leadership team for wider consideration. I do this as a female senior leader who rose to the position of director in three short years at a company which has a 6:5 (male to female) gender split at senior management level and 8:7 across the business – a company which is also a founding member of the All-in Diversity Club and ensures senior leaders regularly interact directly with staff at all levels to communicate strategy, share business updates and collaborate on projects large and small. Once again, thank you for leaving a review – having that courage to speak your mind and challenge leadership so openly is exactly the kind of behaviour we encourage at Microgaming 😊 Natasha

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. Having our headquarters on the Isle of Man is certainly a pro – not only is it a modern and spacious home for our diverse teams, but we have a strong sense of community here on the island. I’m keen to learn what the cons are from your perspective, and would encourage you to share them on here or with me in private if you’d prefer. All such comments, whether positive or negative, help to make our culture and business stronger, as we are constantly learning and improving. Thanks again.
