This may be one of the most disorganized, dishonest, awful companies to work for. There is no future here for any current and future employees.
For starters, the company is shrinking exponentially and has pulled services out of almost half the states it serviced in the last two years. This does not bode well for any of the current employees there, or at least the remaining ones. The company has eliminated the positions of almost 30 staff in the last few months, just from the HQ in Old Lyme, CT alone. The headquarters only had about 80 staff, so it is really looking poor for the company in general.
Did I mention that before all of this, they changed policy to not pay out PTO when you no longer are employed? They made it mandatory to take a payout of half your PTO then fired 30 people. Oh and this policy was only for office staff.
Most, if not all, remaining staff at the Old Lyme office are not only upset with the company but are actively seeking other employment. It is only a matter of time until that office is completely empty. They actually eliminated most of the billing department, then outsourced it to another company for a significant INCREASE in cost. Due to the massive disloyalty of the company, the interior of the building is constantly being vandalized with no end in sight. That’s how upset people are, that they are vandalizing company property. It is not only disgusting, but feels very unsafe due to the violence of the vandalism. When they had the most recent layoff, I was genuinely scared for my safety because of the sheer unprofessionalism and amount of layoffs at once.
After the most recent layoff the new CEO had a company-wide meeting to assure that the layoffs had stopped, and that anyone who was remaining was safe and would not be laid off. Then they let go another 5 employees that week. Management does not care about staff at all, and will fire ANYONE as long as they can keep their (much lower than average) pay and the prospect of a percentage based bonus at the end of the year based on department overhead. The CEO stated that we needed to keep track of every pen and pencil because that is how tight the budget is, and that is why we needed to let go of so many office staff. Keep in mind that the new CEO lives out of state, is not in the office all the time, and special ordered a high end computer setup that totaled over enough to pay for two months salary for the average employee (two laptops, two giant monitors, and everything needed to run it). But we had to make sure that all pens and pencils were accounted for. He spent enough on his setup to pay one average employee for almost two months, but they NEEDED to fire 30 people. Right.
The pay is roughly 20-40% less than average for most positions in the main office, and the clinicians are allowed to collect incredibly high pay for little to no work. There are many clinicians that make much more than they bill out without any obvious repercussions. If you are looking to work at MedOptions and you are clinical staff, its literally a dream job because it takes an act of God to even get written up. Many clinical staff in the field use their own equipment without the devices not meeting HIPAA regulations and management “takes care of it” by asking them politely to not do it, as opposed to actually protecting patient information. If something more is done, it doesn't seem to work.
Throughout the years, there have been more questionable decisions made by management to only ensure that their pocketbooks are filled and not to meet compliance standards. They have asked clinicians to use their own personal computers to fill out Excel documents containing patient information because they were too cheap to provide Microsoft Office on the MedOptions provided laptops. This, by itself, is a massive compliance issue. Once brought to management’s attention, it took about a year to convince them to put Microsoft Office on the clinical computers. This has recently been overturned and MedOptions has again decided to not provide Microsoft Office as of the last time I was aware. Then there was the issue of the repository used to distribute clinical notes, which had no way to meet HIPAA compliance standards by allowing access to ex-employees of facilities. This was recently changed, but was like this for at least 3 years.
Not only is this a terrible place to work, but if MedOptions was present in a facility that I were to send a loved one to, I would not use that home. That’s how much I don’t trust the company to provide adequate care or to protect my loved ones private information.
I will be surprised if the company has not gone under or is sold within the next 6-12 months.
