Pros

Colleagues are great people. The work is enjoyable, but thats really the nature of ecology and being outdoors. The company culture (or lack of) takes away from it. Company vehicles available.

Cons

1 - Some of the poorest wages in the sector 2 - huge staff turnover. Very few people in here longer than a year. Everyone uses this place for experience and moves on quick 3 - lots of false promises. You will be told you can work across all ecology areas from bats, mammals and birds. But you will be pigeon holed into one and remain there. 4 - Constantly hiring graduates with new graduate programs in UG and UCC; this only shows that they can’t retain current staff. They refuse to pay a living wage and are not afraid to subtly threaten staff with being let go if they try negotiate. 5 - Ecology managers lack any and all people skills. Management are hired/promoted strictly on their ability to hit profit targets, not manage people. Management once congratulated staff on hitting an €X million profit target - knowing several of their employees were living with parents/remote working because of the low wages and inability to afford rent in Galway or Dublin 6 - They close the office from 27-29th December because they make you use 3 of your annual leave days for this. So really you get 17 - not the legally required 20

Pros

lots of fieldwork people are genuinely nice good social aspect- pub nights out, bbqs, boat trips and the like, no skimping on Christmas parties . company vans so you don't have to wreck yours Plenty parking

Cons

company taking on too many people too fast and can't support them not enough desks available kitchens always mobbed for lunch an no one cleans after their food very difficult to get a straight answer on procedures eg inputting timesheets and expenses answers change depending on who you ask from departments to sub teams to pods. No set standards, working nights and not knowing what time to put back -nitpicking on timesheets, filling it in in 10 minute increments to fill up a full working week massive turnover, everyone I talked to just started there or was looking for a new job. People leave every week desperate gossiping in the place about other people - project level staff shouldnt be saying private stuff about team members wages very low compared to other companies. Time in lieu is very scattered, sometimes you get it back sometimes you don't. There could be 6 people in the same pod all doing it different. Had to work extra hours but no compensation or appreciation. -company cars are nuts, people take them without booking so you'veno choice to use your own car on destroyed roads hard to get hold of managers to ask questions Hard to have a social life when your site work always changing last minute Place is turning into a machine, lost the culture, just turning a profit and staff are only cogs

Pros

The best part of the job was the people and environment. Colleagues were friendly and social. The managers were easy to approach, friendly and shared a lot of knowledge. They were also really accommodating. The work was enjoyable. There was a good balance between field work and office work. There was the option to work remote at times. I learned a lot. There were weekly meetings and lots of training provided. There were company vehicles. You were provided with workwear. You see a lot of wildlife and beautiful places.

Cons

Underpaid. Underpaid. Underpaid. I was an environmental scientist with nearly 2 years experience on 30-32k. For a job that required a 4 year degree, it will make you struggle financially. Factories pay far better. There is huge demand for environmental scientists, ecologists and ornithologists in other consultancies as a subbie. They pay you an MKO weeks wage in one day if you have the experience. Lack of loyalty in the air. They close the company for Christmas but you had to save 3 of your annual leave days to accommodate this?? They put an emphasis on positive company culture (which there was to be fair) and spent spend thousands on staff trips but it came across as a cheap way of saying "we value you" when wages were so poor and we could all see how much money the company was making.
